Color genetics ?

With the rooster having barring the possible hen could have been a Delaware as they are barred silver. A common silver gold sex link is. RIR over Delaware, but Buff Orp could be used as well.

ok so the crossing I was told was backwards (who was over who) but correct on genes. thank you again! Can you point me to genetics for beginners? A book, an on line source? I trust that you know what is best and where I should start.

I started with Grant Brereton's Making New Colours on download. It is a nice introductory book and not too expensive. The book that I use as my go to book and has tons of color pictures is Genetics of Chicken Colours, by Sigrid Van Dort - David Hancox it is in limited print and cost about $125 but is well worth the cost as it shows several pictures seeing the examples of different genes at work.

I also like to play with this genetic calculator http://kippenjungle.nl/breeds/crossbreeds.html at times you need to know the differences in some of the jargon that is different between the US and other countries, but this is a great tool and has information throughout the website as well. This is an amazing calculator as to learning and seeing outcomes of crosses and future crosses.

Have fun.

Thank you so much! I wrote it all down in my chicken book. I bet it will be fun after I tear my hair out learning!

@1muttsfan I just read part one of the link. WOW, really cool, I get the idea but doubt I would write an accurate prunnett square yet. I want to cross RIR over BO. So, (b+, b+) would maybe be my male with (e+) and (p+) I know it isn't exactly a total profile, I was trying for color w/o barring and single comb. Mind you I have not printed out the lesson for reference, just a quick try to see if I'm getting the basic idea. How did I do?

The male carries two genes for barring, so b+/b+ .... hen only carries one b+/ (Sex linked Genes are like this sex linked barring, silver and gold). RIR would be eWh/eWh and BO would also be eWh/eWh. The only difference in these 2 breeds other than type are the BO carries Db/Db and the ginger/dark brown and they also carry a dilute Di/Di.
