Yes I'm still trying to positive identify what kinda quail I have. I was certain they are bobwhite, but the more I look at photos of other people's quail, I'm starting to doubt myself. All I know is when I bought them, the teenager selling them said that they COULD be released into the wild. I've since learned you must have a permit to do so with the bobwhite. I'm almost certain I must have a permit to raise and sell them as well. Not a huge problem, as the permit isn't expensive, and from what I can gather, I just need to keep records of what I raise, sell, what dies, etc.

Anyway, to my question, do bobwhite chicks have yellow beaks at 3-4 weeks old? Will their beaks turn black, and if so, at what age? I was reading a website on them, and it was saying the males have a black top and bottom beak, while the females do not. Also the males have white markings around their face, while the females have a beige coloring.

Darn I just need to post some photos and see if you all know what I have! Would be much easier! LOL!

Mine are about 2 weeks ? give or take, and their beaks are orange-ish. I believe the main differences between bobs and coturnix is the shape of their beaks and their stripes. Bobs have wider head stripes than coturnix do. But pics would be very helpful

Bob Whites Start Out Almost "horn Color" Then Change Going Thru Tan/ Orange/ To Finally Black At About 4 Months Of Age. The Easiest Way Is To Look At The Shape Of The Beak. If It Is Kinda Strait, Like A Chickens Then It Is Most Likely Coturnix Or Blue Scale. If It Is Hooked Like A Parrot Its Bob White, Or Gambles, Or Valley. Stripe Size And Patern Is Difficult Until Your Familiar With Different Quail Species--- Coturnix Usually Have Narrow Stipes, Especially On The Head, And Bob Whites Are Normally Wide, But Valleys Are Narrow Too.... Thus You Can See The Dificulty With Trying The "stripe Method" Take A Couple Of Pix And Email Them To Me Or Post On Here And I May Be Able To Help Id Them For You
