Color Project

I'm going to use a houdan roo over a couple of black silkie hens..., keep the F1 and cross them with each other, then breed back to a silkie.

Sounds like a good plan. I have looked at the chicken color calculator, but I am lost.I dont quite understand genetics with chickens, only horses. Has anyone bred Mottled silkies before?

not that I know of... mottle is recessive, so is silkie feathering.. the F1 crosses should give you 25% chance of a mottled and silkie feathered birds.

nahh... I got about 12 cuckoo and crele running around already...

only know the colours I've worked with...

buff barred will be one of next year breeding pen, might come out buff columbian barred at first... doubt the colour will show that well, I have a light partridge with barring and that only shows the faintest trace of barring...

campine is autosomal barring, 2nd pic red with dominant white (tail), 3rd one is similar to my crele, 4th one is a proper buff barred.

I'm working on mottled, but used cochins instead of houdans to bring mottling in. No mottled silkies yet, though--it would be great to gt more working on them

The campine pattern looks similar to partridge when the feathers are silkie. I'm pretty sure I have a couple that are red quill, which is similar to campine pattern.

wow, you sure know alot about genes! also, that is a very pretty bird you have. i wish i could get my hands on some silkies, but my boyfriend thinks they look like ugly poodles. and i'm sure alot of us think poodles are ugly in the first place

anyhow, i thinks silkies are very cute. i had a few when i was very young and they were my favorites. maybe when i get a more steady cash flow i can afford to expand my flock
