Color question

Can a chicken be split to other colors like black split to blue? I hatched a chick and im pretty sure its blue its parents are a black ameraucana x bcm and i know for a fact the father as hes the only bird i own with a pea comb and chick has a pea comb and the egg is from my only bcm hen so theres no mix up

The answer to the first question is no.. A bird cannot be black and "split to blue".

No copies of blue gene = black bird
One copy of blue gene = blue bird
Two copies of blue gene = splash bird

Is it possible that one of the parents is actually a very very dark blue? It's not uncommon for people to have blue birds that are so dark as to look black

Pictures of the parents (and any other possible roosters) would be useful!

both are definatly black

How certain are you that the BCM was the mom? I see a lovely blue hen just to her right in that picture? No chance of some egg shenanigans?

Shes my only dark egg layer hen next to her lays green i know for a fact as she was seperated to see egg color

So that egg next to the chick isn’t what it hatched from?

And no other possible parents? At least one of the parents had to be blue or splash. And as you say, at least one had to contribute pea comb genes.

Are you *sure* he's not blue?

He looks pretty grey compared to my blacks (some of these are multiple photos of the same birds):

My blacks are so dark and iridescent that they look like black glass.

Nope rest of my pens are wyandottes this chick has feathered feet like mom and was in this tiny coop with the black ameruacana

prior to being in this coop she was penned with females only

Is it possible your chick is actually black? I had a few chicks last year that I was convinced were blue by their down color but they feathered in completely black.
