Does any one know someone who can vent sex? If, and I do mean *if*, my eggs hatch this time, I feel like I will be overwhelmed with chicks and would like to sex them as soon as possible.(I have 8 more chicks ordered due around the same time as theses guys..). Or how long does it usually take to be able to tell a roo from a hen in other ways?

Wendy, You actually have many options on getting a chick in two weeks. There is Elizabeth Country Store, or Big R in March (maybe earlier). Also, someone here who hatches out chicks around the same time, or someone has an order come in around the same time as yours hatches. Or you drive to fountain today, and get half dozen or so and add them to your bator. I am sorry about your frozen eggs, what do they do, leave them on the trucks overnight???

Chick Burb, The tea would probably work to make you sleepy, as would the work out. Another thing you might try is Valerian, in pill form, it also comes in tea form, but since you don;t like tea.........

Adam, This page has some info. http://msucares.com/poultry/management/poultry_sexing.html I don't know anyone off hand. Might look at some You Tube vids too.

Hi Coloradogal,
You are so sweet!
I have no particular kind in mind, I just don't want to have one single chick. I think I would take anything so that he/she had a little companion to grow up with. Originally, I thought my second batch of eggs would be close enough in time to put the chicks together ( the two batches are about a week apart) but I have very LOW expectations of the BCM batch of eggs that I have.

Hi all!

Just found this thread and was going to see if any of you are out here on the Western Slope, but when I saw the number of posts, I figured it would take me about a month or two to get through them all! So, if anyone reads this that's on the Western Slope, let me know! Would be great to 'meet' you!

We have a small flock of chickens comprised of two BO, a Light Brahma, several Americauna/Leghorn crosses, some colored Leghorns and some who knows what, as well as two geese and four Khaki Campbell ducks.

I am planning on bringing in some Freedom Rangers and Cornish X to raise and sell as meat birds this spring, as well as bring in some of the Basque Hens and maybe some Buckeyes. I also may see if the place that had the Americauna/Leghorn crosses is still breeding them this year. Had hoped to use the one roo on the three hens that I have to see what we would get, but I haven't had a chance to build a separate place for them. Maybe this year!

Just ran the egg numbers for this past week. with us being 10 days now with daylight more than 10 hours per day, we have seen a definate upswing in rate of lay. Way happy!

Welcome to all the new folk on the Colorado thread that i may have missed!

Ok, my hatch is done at 5/22.

I started a thread with the eggtopsy of one of the eggs to see if anyone has some insight as to what went wrong. Something needs to be fixed, I don't want this happening again. Step one is using local only eggs for a while but I just keep wondering if something else contributed...

kind of a low hatch rate. Sorry.
