One of my girls is named Squeaky 'cause she made so much noise she kept me awake at night (the brooder was in the laundry room). She never grew out of it, so just pray the name 'Squeakers' is just a name.

Hi. Have not posted in awhile.

Our five hens year old hens are doing great so we decided to get five more chicks. Found a black australorp and 2 buff orpingtons yesterday between a day and a week old.

Just need 2 barred rock chicks to complete our flock. Would like unvaccinated chicks if possible and would like to find them soon so they are about the same age as our other babies.

Anyone know of any barred rock chicks around the Springs for sale? I have checked Craigslist, etc. Kiowa and Elizabeth country stores chicks are all vaccinated and am hoping to find some that haven't been.

Agrifeed won't have chicks till March and we are hoping to get them sooner. Thanks everyone.

Our older hens are Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Black Australorp, Production Red, and an Easter Egger. The BR is the best layer of the bunch.
I may be getting some barred rock chicks this week. I won't know until the order arrives but I will definantly post here when I figure out what I have.

I have 2 extra barred rock pullets if you're interested. They're about a week old now. I'd sell the for $5 each. If you're interested, pm me and we can figure it out.

Eta: they are unvaccinated and have been fed unmedicated food.

Hey Guys, I got this message today sent to my Windy Ridge email. If any of you can help her out, please contact her

Hi,
I am not sure where to start, with this but here it goes, first of all I am an animal lover first and a photographer second. I am entertaining the idea of using chicks or bunnies in my Easter mini photo sessions and I am reaching out to you because I have exhausted all other options (petting zoo rentals) etc in my area. I've searched the internet for hours, asked other photographers, contacted local shops and I just can't find anyone willing to listen or help.

Here is what I am looking for and maybe you can point me in the correct direction, if it won't work out then maybe I'll try for next year. I'd like to rent chicks for the day for my shoot then return them to their owner. I don't mind paying, I'm happy if the owner would like to participate as well to insure the safety of the animals, but I do not have the means for keeping them. I could easily go out and purchase them from my local feed store, getting them isn't my issue, but I do not feel that is the right thing to do when our house isn't equipped to actually care for them.

Would you know of anyone willing to entertain this idea? My tentative mini session date is March 16 and I looked at your website and saw that you won't have chicks until March 23rd. I am located in Highlands Ranch, CO. I'd greatly appreciate any help or contacts you may have in my area.

Thanks so much,
Sharon Arnoldi

So what do you guys use for bedding in your brooders and coops. My babies are only 3 days old and are my first. I'm using shavings with paper towels. I was reading a blog on FB and they were discussing sand as a better betting choice for coop and brooder. What do you guys think? Also should I still be using paper towels? They are plain white, so can I put the soiled ones in my compost? I don't think my babies have pasty butt but get dried poop on their fluff. I've been cleaning it off but should I? Or is the water to much maybe getting them to cold?

I use paper towels for the first week, then pine shavings forever after. Honestly, I would think sand would get messy as heck. Imagine if you spilled it in the house! As for the coop area, I don't know. I just know I am happy with the sawdust and so are my girls.

With poop in the fluff, I would clean of significant deposits to help keep it from turning into pasty butt but let it be if its just a little here or there.

So you use sawdust outside not shavings? Do you do deep litter method? Where do you get sawdust at? How often when brooding do u change the shavings, or how do you clean it out?

When I set up a brooder I put down a thick layer of newspaper, then a few inches of shavings, then two layers of paper towel. I leave them on the paper towel anywhere from a few days to a week. I pull up the paper towel, and unless there is moisture already in the shavings, which there usually isn't, I leave them on the shavings, adding an inch every day until the next week, when I remove all the shavings and newspaper and replace with clean. The soiled shavings and newspaper go in the compost pile.

My coop is deep litter shavings, so managed similarly except I don't take shavings out except once or twice a year. Theoretically they should compost, but it's so dry here I can't say I've seen it happen until I put it on the compost pile and wet it down. I have not noticed any odor, and when I visited Wendell, who also does deep litter, I detected no odor in his coop either.

Right now I am brooding chicks under the house in the 4' crawl space, and if there was any odor it would be noticeable in the house. So far, no odor.

I know there are folks who swear by brooding on sand, and if the chicks are not in the house it probably works well, but in the house, I agree with Chick, far too much potential for a mess.

Best of luck with your chicks, they are adorable :)
