yay! i found a store closer to me that's getting some marans in on Fri so i can replace my little roo. bad thing is that the feed store i got him from will take him back and replace him with one of their chicks but they won't issue a refund. would any of you like a free 3.5 week old cukoo maran roo? he's very and going to be a beautiful bird but i can't keep him.

Just curious as to what characteristic tells you it's a roo. I don't know how to tell
with this breed the coloring gives it away...the roosters are lighter the pullets are quite a but darker because they don't have 2 barring genes, how big his feet are at 3.5 weeks old, and the Combs and wattles appearing and turning red already are all indicators of being a roo

Omg.. My OE chick is driving me nuts.. So noisy!! I think I am going to have to get rid of her, I don't think I can handle being woke up 4-5 times a night...or I wonder if I move them to the garage instead of the basement..

I had one doing this when i first got them home. That was the one that was constipated or her digestive trac was not working correctly. She had a case of pasty butt as well. I ended up giving her some oliv oil oraly and a olive oil enima with an eye dropper. Once she started to poop she has been much quieter. I also started to put ACV in their water. About 1/4 tea spoon in the quart. This seems to have gotten the guts working. It may quieten down by itself but keep an eye on the food and water intake and discharge. What goes in must come back out.

So I scored yesterday!

Had to run some errands and go to geet blood work done for Beth, pick up prescriptions, etc. As a last stop, we swung by Lowe's in Fountain fo pick up some cheap handles. We see a pallet in front of the lumber area that has a bunch of shingles on it. A variety of colors, etc. Some didn't look too good... So I go in and ask how much for the pallet of shingles. We go out, look them over, and the guys says, "how about $40? I say, "how about $10?" he looks at me funny and says, "how about $40?" I say OK. I got 9 1/2 bundles of new shingles for $40.. The packaging was gone, and a couple of them were loose and a few more have a little edge damage. The regular price was $38 per bundle. Yup that comes out to a 90% discount! SCORE!!!!! I don't think the chickens will care about the multi-colored roofing....... And I don't have to deal with an HOA that butts into my business, so we're good there too!

The pallet sitting outside the indoor lumber yard entrance? I had been eyeballing that pallet for the past 2 weeks... Sort of red-ish shingles? I saw that they banded some of the loose ones together.. I was always in a hurry and never had a chance to ask about them.

I agree with Margie, sometimes they settle down.  Sadly, sometimes it means they are in distress and failure to thrive.  Then they will chirp incessantly until they chirp no more.   Is the little guy eating and drinking?

I dip its beak in water every day about 3 times a day. I haven't seen any of my chicks eat or drink though this morning I got the noisy one to eat a crumble out of my hand. That is the first I have seen. She hatched late Friday early Saturday. The other 2 hatched mid afternoon Saturday... When should I expect to see them eating and drinking? Is there anything else I can do to encourage them? I sprinkled crumbles on their paper towels to see if they would peck at them that way..

LOL. Yup! There were brown, reddish and gray ones, at least what I noticed when unloading them. They were happy that they "finally got rid of them..."
