I am wondering why chicks raised by momma chicken don;t get pasty butt? Is it because she keeps them extra warm, and maybe some humidity is transferred from her to them? Just wondering.........

WOW. That article is sooooo misleading, and yes, don't try and change peoples minds, is not worth your breath. They will believe what they want to believe.

I thought someone in here mentioned that chicks raised with adult chicks are exposed to the adult poo that would already have some helpful gut bacteria instead of being raised in the sterile environment of a brooder.

Yeah, I've recently become a believer in the 'if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything' philosophy. At least around my family! It sure has calmed things down when we get together, now I just have to find a way to channel that energy somewhere else instead of bottling it all up.... Actually!! I've found that coming home and watching the chicks do their thing for 10-20 minutes really helps put things into perspective.

Wow.

Does this mean I can have as many chickens as I want?!

I don't remember how much land you have, but after reading your link it sounds like if you're under 2.5 acres and residentially zoned you can have "a reasonable number of hens" and no roosters, and if you are 2.5 acres or more you are allowed a hobby farm which would include an unlimited number of hens and roosters.

I'm not an attorney so you might call the county clerk or zoning board and ask for clarification, or even call your county commissioner and ask. That is just my reading of it. Maybe they were tired of counting chickens, huh?

As far as Douglas county is concerned, I should be able to have as many chicks as I want here on 7 acres. HOA law, however, is a different story (no livestock). Every other house here has at least 6 girls and nobody ever raises a stink about it. My broody has been sitting on 11 eggs for 20 days now! If any, or all, are roo's I'm gonna find them a home just to be safe. The lady I got the eggs from said she would take them back, but I'm sure they would end up as dinner.
P.S. Odd horses are O.K. and I could swear someone around here has a tiger, but they aren't considered livestock.
