I have an escape artist! If I have the brooder lid open Buffy jump/flies out. She used to need to jump on the waterer, but tonight I was cleaning it out and came back into the room to find Buffy sitting on the edge of the box.... Then another one almost made it out, if her aim had been better she would have been successful!

I need to get these girls out of my house!! They are 4 and 5 weeks old and have many feathers. But the coop/run is barely started! All this moisture is really preventing me from getting the work done that needs doing. :(
Little rascals. They think they are so sneaky. I couldn't figure out why I had random bird droppings outside the brooder last year until I came home late & saw 2 perching where they shouldn't have been. But what's even more interesting is how they found their way back into the brooder the next morning so I didn't even notice several days later.
Yep, I have had a two week old perching on top of the rubbermaid..... I finally just put paper towels down in the poop zone, chick-proofed the area and got them outside ASAP. Oh, and I made a ladder for them to get back in just in case they hopped down, but they didn't do that in the first week of perching up there. Yes, it took me a week to get the space set up in the coop for them......

This am......
4 hatched, 1 zip, 5 pips day 22 ( Doing better this time around.)
Yay! More little ones.
Why would a hen refuse to come off a roost? My yr old BO did not want to get off the roost today. Normally she's out by 6 or so and i just now took her off and put her outside. Her crop feels empty, but normal, no injuries that i can see, she has a soft ball size, squishy area in her abdomen....but she normally doesn't do her huge morning poo till she's out of the coop so I think that might be it... She also pecked at me when i reached toward her on the roost. She will normally only peck if you try to reach under her while she's in the nesting box. Any ideas? Things i should check? I've never dealt with a strange acting chicken before.

* I noticed a hard mass in the squish abdomen..since it feels egg shaped i'm guessing she has one stuck in there. So she's had a warm bath, some vaseline put in and around her vent, she's currently relaxing in some clean bedding in a storage tub in the house. I also gave her a little bit of leftover scrambled egg from breakfast with some crushed tums sprinkled on top and some tetracycline powder in her water just in case meds are needed.

Does that sound like a good start? I've never dealt with anything like this before.
I hope she is feeling much better soon!
So I was reading that you can put food coloring in a hen's vent to see who is laying. Anyone ever try anything like that?
I believe wendell did this last year with lipstick. But I'm really intrigued by the food coloring. Maybe it will last longer?
I have also heard of using lipsticks. The key is to not mix them up with your regular lipsticks!
That is so gross. lol

WOW, all you guys hatching all those eggs. How eggciting!! I don't remember having this much incubating and hatching going on last year, is it just because I am going senile?

My little girls have had a few exciting days of discovery. They have their own section of the coop and the run to keep them away from the big girls. But in the run, the fencing allows them to go into the adult section while keeping the adults OUT of their area. In the coop there is no mingling. But Thursday while I was in the house they discovered the ramp into the big girls' section of the coop. I came out looking for them, and found that all but one had discovered the big girls roost. That one kept trying to fly up to it, would get just high enough to hook her neck over it, then fall down. Too funny. By the time I ran to the house to get the camera, they were outside again.

That day they also found out that pumpkin is a very nice treat.

Friday they saw that the adults had been given pumpkin, but they had not.

They have already learned to keep their distance from the adults, so.............

They patiently waited until the coast was clear.

They get a little braver with the adults every day, but still make a graceful exit to their side when the distance separating them is less than about 3 feet.

#39, my Dominique from Wendell is convinced the chicks have the BEST treats, lol.
What a good idea you have for your little girls.

Kmatt - How's the girl this am? Fingers crossed here.

Hi Newbies!!!!

I am pretty sure hatching is done here, no more pips. Pulled 11 babies and left the 5 unhatched in for another day just in case. Kinda glad that is over because my back was getting tired from being malpositioned over the incubator for the past two days. We also got 3 inches of snow....

I'll try to post some pictures. The one that is hatching now didn't have clean lines. She just destroyed her egg all the way around and then pushed out. Some of the others appear to be making clean lines.

Congrats on all the new chicks hatching and welcome to all the new folks to the thread!

Had a busy day yesterday. Lots to do before ChickenFest.

Installed weathsripping on the feed shed door.

Got the work shelter cleaned up and organized.

Got alot of things picked up and ready to take to the dump. Started roto-tilling the back yard to level it out a bit for ChickenFest.

The second shipment of hatching eggs should be here tomorrow, so the incubator is ready to go for tomorrow afternoon.
