Colorado

Well, the unbelievable happened. I've been collecting more bantam cochins eggs to incubate, writing dates on them, hen that laid them etc. They were on my kitchen counter waiting to collect enough to put in the incubator. I came home yesterday afternoon to an empty basket. I asked DH, where are my cochin eggs? What eggs he asks? The ones in the basket, I say. He says, oh I made eggs for breakfast.

Now mind you, I've been attempting to hatch eggs for a month and a half already and leaving the eggs there with no problem. And I also currently have approximately 11 dozen eggs in cartons in the refrigerator that I will be selling. Guess I have all 11 dozen to sell now since none of those got eaten. Back to square one with my cochin hatching.

Awwww, that's awful. I am guessing the D isn't standing in for Dear at the moment.

I'm way behind on posts so welcome to the newbies, if we have any. Wendell, hate to ask again, how many of the poults made it? The 2 I kept are doing fine but my brother lost 2 of his.
Two died. Three made it so far.

And you said "surviving" because???? Did I miss something? Are there only three left or just the picture only shows three? I remember you saying something about the wind taking out the light, but I thought they were OK?
Of the five that we had, one looked a little off from the beginning. It died first. Then another one died. No idea why. The heat lamp got unplugged, but all appeared to do fine after that for a couple of days, then we lost the first one, then a couple days after that we lost the second one. The remaining three seem to be doing well.

Here are some new photos of our new chicken run...

this is the chicken playground make from some scrub oak and branches

this is for my little chicks (who were in the garage when I took this photo)

Very nice!

I made some good progress on my run today! Next up is the roof... but the snowy forecast is not helping!

Looking good!

Sad but kindof funny at the same time...... When we were collecting for hatching, (though all were duds) I had to label them and keep reminding the family that those were for hatching, not for eating.

I mentioned this on the FB group, but I don't think I mentioned it here....

Candled the shipped eggs yesterday, and though technically only day 6, 47 out of 48 show signs of development. !!!!!!

I hope we get a good hatch. We know that a lot can happen, but so far this if the best candling we have had.

Sweet. 2 more may be roos as well. It's hard to tell at this age. At least the EE and Leghorn are girls for sure. That's really all I wanted. If I return them to the lady I got the eggs from they will end up on the dinner table for sure. Think of yourself as saving a life. We're halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs.

The next step on my run building is the roof.... I'll be installing some clear suntuf roofing on top of hardware cloth and a standard 2x4 support system for the suntuf panels. Has anyone worked with this material before? Any tips on drilling/installing?
