Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to purchase chicks in the Colorado Springs area. We aren't ready to get new chicks yet, but I would like to do some research before spring. We are looking for some variety in our city flock. Also, do any local hatcheries sex chicks? We aren't allowed to have roosters in the Springs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

If you get birds from Big R or Colorado Agrifeed, they are most likely coming from Privett Hatchery. I bought a Rouen from Big R. He was a healthy duck, but nothing special as far as body type. Just a typical hatchery bird.

If you want show quality, you may be better off buying from a private breeder. If that isn't an issue, you can wait for the feed store to have them on sale in spring or order birds. McMurray Hatchery has some nice birds. I have a McMurray Welsh Harlequin Drake.

OUCH! That price was right! Too bad I didn't see that three days ago!

Just wanted to pop in and say Yay! One of the cochin hens we bought has gone broody! She is currently sitting on one of her own eggs, plus 2 EE's, and three others, at least one of which is an Aussie!

Yay!! And they are all marked so we don't pull the wrong ones out when other hens lay in there!

I
researched them and they are real good layers and are supposed to be able to take the cold like naked necks.
But they are also cuddly like silkies and bear confinement well, so they would even make good house pets.

I can't get them, I think I would be evicted by my husband if I tried something like that.
(It's enough I get to keep my ducks, I had 19 up till a week ago . . .)
You breed the females to male silkies, and the males to female silkies.
Some mad scientists are even breeding them to sizzles and to polish to get even more Dr. Suess type critters.

Would anyone locally be interested in a black Marans layer hen? She is $15. She's from eggs I hatched this spring, she's been laying since early Sept....large dark brown eggs. Not quite the chocolate brown of some Marans. She originated from black copper flock but is pure beautiful black with lots of purple sheen. She's a gorgeous hen, just a little too noisy for my taste. Very little feathering on her feet.
Would meet at GOlden Feed Mill if interested or can bring her to Nov 14 swap in Brighton.
