Three wet chicks running aroung in the bator this morning. I have no idea which other ones have pipped now since the first arriving have rolled over most of the eggs.. should I be worried about this situation. The temp dropped to 97 in there last night also and the humidity is up to 75%, I have read this is normal though. Should I worry about the eggs that have gotten rolled over and around, including the others that have pipped already?

If you have plugs in air vents you can remove them to get the humidity back down under 70%, otherwise just pretend there is a combination lock on it and it will be a day or two before you get the combination - once the chicks have pipped internally, the humidity has to stay pretty stable otherwise the membrane can "shrink wrap" them and they won't be able to turn in the shell to get zipped. First 18 days high humidity can drown chicks, last 3 days it isn't so much of an issue, and yes it is common for the humidity to shoot up when chicks hatch. It is also common for the first to hatch to roll the other eggs around, and basically if they're going to hatch, they hatch regardless. I line the mesh with rubberized shelf paper to minimize it, and to give the chicks something easy to walk on, but obviously many, many chicks have hatched on just the mesh and thrived.

Samsr- keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of your babies!

Pozees- how did the Swap go? I didn't end up going. I actually sold or had reservations placed on every chick I had on hand by Friday evening. It's going to be strange to have all empty brooders for a few days. I should get the Orloffs by Thursday, so normacy will return quickly. :)

We've got ten ducklings, and they only lasted a week in the brooder. They were just SO messy and stinky we finished their stall in the barn three weeks early. Now with a bigger, more open space they're less stinky and much happier. We bring in a tub of water for them every few days, so they can clean off the FF and that seems to work well. I think with lots of space they'll be perfectly happy, I imagine smaller backyards would really take a beating with all the water. We had a one gallon in with them at first, and they emptied it about twice a day. Now they have a huge five gallon, and we fill it once a day. I can't wait till they're big enough to go out in the yard, they're just so cute waddling around.

I didn't go either, I sold/promised everything except the chicks I just got on Friday morning, and I didn't think it was a great idea to drive them 2 hours to an outdoor swap :)

Shipping stress and altitude sickness = a slow prolonged lethargic death despite oral karo syrup, vitamins in water and sulfa dimethoxinime (rx coccidiostat just in case).
My last silkies from shy faired much better. They are doing great.

6 out and 9 more zipping. I went to big r and the 3 more decided to come out of their shells. It is looking like it will be a good first hatch at this rate. Only 3 more to pip now.
