Hatch Update: Hard to believe that it has been 3 weeks since the massacre. The eggs from that night are hatching now. So far, the silkie eggs are doing the best although one of the darker green eggs has hatched. I believe I have 7 in there now with 4 more that have pipped.

I did everything wrong on this hatch. I 'forgot' to stop the automatic turning and then realized this morning that I left the separators in there too. To make all of that even worse, I didn't even put them on lockdown until yesterday so this is a dry hatch. So I either completely couldn't count my days due to grieve or something is wrong with my temperature and they are hatching early.

Thankfully, for whatever reason, even when I completely screw up everything with my hatches, the eggs I set tend to do well. I think I've had every opps there is from loss of heat to forgetting to turn the turner on. This time, I can add leaving it in the autoturn tray and not bringing the humidity up for lockdown. sigh.

I will leave them in the incubator until tomorrow night and take pictures. This time, the silkie babies are not going out to the broody.

It is hard to believe! Can't wait to see pics! :)

I was so hoping your girl would show back up like mine did, so sorry she is gone. Glad your wry neck Silkie is all better, just amazing something like that can happen. What did you end up giving her? Vitamins?

Yep, I visit that site often, as some of those pictures are so beautiful!

I know nothing about the netting. Will you put up a perimeter fence? Or around the chickens area? Do they make netting just for chickens? I have not researched that one yet.

I used Poly Vi Sol with Vitamin E and Selenium added. The first week I really didn't think it would work, then all of a sudden about halfway through the second week she just started getting better. Very relieved.

Electronet is hot net fencing with step in posts built in, it can be moved around as necessary and lots of folks use it for birds, but also for goats, sheet, etc. It isn't cheap and I don't see it in my immediate future, but down the road definitely considering it. For now I have to build runs on the new coop so the birds in pens in there have access to fresh air and sunshine. They have plenty of room, but need to get outside. I may just put up T-posts and hang wire fence on them for now, I can't seem to settle on exactly how I want to construct the runs.

I use electronet fence all the time. I guess money is all relative to what someone thinks is expensive. I think it is very reasonable. 160 feet of fencing is just over $100. It take just a few minutes to set up and works 100% of the time. I think the charger was $150 but I can link any number of electric fencing to the one charger (solar). I have two and a half acres on one charger and several different configurations of fence for different needs.
I use it for pigs, dogs, birds. It is so easy

We finally got our coop/run set up secured enough to house chickens! The coop still needs paint, a pop door, ramp, and watering system, but I am SOO excited to just have the girls out of my house. And they sure love their new home. :)

Beautiful!

Do those glass panels go down on all sides? What a great way to shut them in quickly in inclement weather.

Just send you a PM,

So far, there are 9 babies. None of my refridgerated eggs have hatched so far. I knew it would be a chance on them. I still have a couple more to pip.

good luck!!

I never knew that cutworms turned into miller moths! I definitely get these nasty things in my garden every spring. You can literally just put a shovel in the ground and pull up a half dozen at a time.
I put the cardboard from toilet paper rolls around my tomato plant stems so the cutworms can't eat/get to the stems.

Busy preparing for ChickenFest.

  • Games are made.
  • STAFF t-shirts are ready. They are bright orange.
  • Name tags are printed and ready.

This afternoon I will have time to straighten up my chicken yard, then tomorrow afternoon will be the final cleanup in the back yard. The porta-potty will arrive Friday afternoon as well. Saturday morning we will start EARLY to get things set up.

Please park on the EAST side of the wood fence. Please do not block the driveway or access.
