Another starter for your FF is unpasturized buttermilk...it has the good cultures for the FF. I found mine at Whole Foods, the one at Safeway was pasteurized.

The yogurt cultures are the wrong ones. There's an article on the Natural Chicken Keeping website, about why the buttermilk is the right one to use. There are also a few threads on here about how and what to use.

I just got a call from the breeder my last batch of hatching eggs came from. She lost her entire flock of over 300 birds today. Apparently someone who came over to buy some hens had ILT (Infectious Laryngotracheitis) on her shoes that she dragged from home. I had to look it up but the chooks eyes swelled up before they started dying. The only birds left are 5 Pekins. Let this be a lesson as to whom you let into in your coop.

On a brighter note - the contractor doing some remodeling on the kitchen was here this morning and wants my ducks!

That's awfull to hear about that many chickens dying
On a lighter note, I believe that one of my 19 week olds laid her first egg today. a nice light brown kinda weird shaped egg, it is half egg shaped and then partially caved in on one side. It is in tact though. It is from one of three. either the speckled Sussex, black australorp or the buff orpington. I'm not sure which. The SS did squat for me when I reached down to pet her, but her earlobes really aren't red enough. I guess I will have to do some watching and see if I can find out who laid the egg.
I am south of Fountain along the creek. Where is this smoke that I am seeing and smelling coming from. wind is from the wrong direction of the black forest fire.
Wendell, do you have smoke at your place too?

We have smoke up in the mountains west of Colorado Springs. Got a notice it's from fires all over the state.

I think this smoke is probably coming from the Freemont county fire between Cotapaxi and Canyon City. Its getting pretty thick.
