Colorado

A neighbor came over Saturday afternoon and we got ALL the holes for phase 3 dug with a power auger. It only took about 30 minutes for 25 holes.

We also enjoyed the visit from Amie and her family.
OMG I've dug 17 holes by hand so far. I went to the tool rental place but they told me that the augers were no good in this rocky soil. Apparently you had some luck, though...

We have used a power auger for about 75% of the holes we have dug, eith er the tow behind version, or one mounted on a skidster. My neighbor rented his at Home Depot. and did about 50 holes with it Saturday morning at his place before coming over to my place. Even though we are about 1/2 mile from each other, our soils are very different. His is very gravelly/sandy, while I think we dug up two small rocks in all the holes we bored at my place. The one he rented was pulled behind his car. The tool rental place wasn't accurate in their statement to you.......

Still trying to get our fence built so I can get the girls home. We got a little delayed, and I have to go out of town again on Wednesday and then again in two weeks. :(

Anyone else getting hail and rain? The hail was nickel sized and the rain and lightning has put a crimp on my yard work list. :/

It was funny watching the girls reaction. One of my grown hens (Scrambles) started racing back and forth, apparently confused by the strange things falling from the sky. The poor littles I had to rush back inside. I had my 5 week old EEs outside for a day trip/initial introductions and this kicked off not 15 minutes after I put them out.

My chickens LOVE hail! They run around like crazy eating it.

On an interesting note, my Marans cockerel may be a pullet. 9 weeks old with no saddle or sickle feathers in evidence and a generally henly appearance. :/ If the storm hadn't hit when it did I was going to get some more pics for the gender guessing section. This little one is confusing the heck out of me... I had it so stuck in my mind as a him after comparing to his/her siblings at 5 weeks that I didn't REALLY look again until yesterday. Maybe s/he is just looking dainty compared with the Cornish roasters (OMG those are BIG!!!).

Is anyone else experiencing as much trouble as I am with my boy? So just a basic run through of what I have had to put up with from him: about 2 months ago, he got 2 cases of bumblefoot on 1 foot. He walks extremely weird, probably because he's 12 pounds. I did surgical procedures on him for that and everything came out great. He just got another case on the other foot. So, I did the surgery, only 10 days prior to us going on vacation. It was only minor, but seriously, 3 cases?????!!!!! He doesn't let some bandages (ok, a lot) get him out of the mood to "get it on" with a few of my ladies. All day, he's trying to do it with any hen he likes that's near him. I have tried nearly everything to get this boy behaving, and so far nothing is working!!! I can't get any more hens because he picks and chooses who he likes (5 of my 13 girls). We can't cull him because 1. My mom will refuse to eat him 2. We are so close to going on vacation. Am I just the lucky one?
