I did not know that this thread could be that active! We were busy on vacation for 10 wonderful days. We went to Las Vegas, and it was sooo fun. We just liked to walk around, see hotels, go shopping, ya know, tourist-y things. We have only been back for 11 days, that seem like months.

I have a question- our chicken coop has turned into a marsh with all this rain, and the stench!

Does anyone have experience with chicken coops turning into a marsh? If someone does, can you give me any tips on how to get it back to normal? At this point, nearly any advice is appreciated.

My only experience was this spring when we had lots of snow. I have sand in the coop it just stayed wet for days and was awful. First chance I had I dug it out with a shovel and replaced with new sand. I wore a respirator. It wasn't so bad until you started digging down in.....all i can say is my my my.....We never had that happen before, we now have a full cover over the top.
So I dug out and then put down lime and food grade DE and layered all back in. The lime helps tremendously with the smell.
Glad you & your fam had a great vacation. I am in need of one of those. But I hate leaving my house, garden and chickens and depending where we go the dog.... in someone elses hands..... Ya know no one can take care of them as well as me....:)

Good luck.

I had an 8 egg day today. I still want to catch the silky in the nesting box. I am almost positive she is laying. I believe her eggs are the ones that are 40 grams.
I am now just sitting around watching fountain creek rise as my house is about 30 feet away and 24 feet above it. The creek is up about 3 feet but it is not bad at the moment. The chickens are high and dry 70 feet away and another 10 feet above the lower part of the house.

Sam, you guys still OK with the creek rising?

The chickens stayed high and dry last night. I was up until about 3 checking on the creek height. It came up about 8 feet at its highest point. It is a bit spooky watching it rise and knowing that there is nothing you can do if the water decides to take everything. All is well other than we are going to lose a big tree due the flooding. It is leaning pretty good towards the creek. The creek would need to raise another 10 feet to get to the house and if that happens it would have to flood clear to I 25. I think we are safe at the moment. I may need to bring in some more LARGE concrete for piece of mind however. I sure wish i could have gotten a pic. But it was too dark.

We had an one and one half inch of rain last night, and lost power around ten or ten thirty, not sure when it came back on. Has anyone heard if Ute Pass is OK? This storm seemed to be tracking west to east, and then stalled for a few hours, or was really BIG!

Glad to hear everyones chickens are ok!!!!!

today was a 15 egg day! Wahoo!

Woohoo! Congrats!

I agree with the Sand suggestion. We have a dirt floor (wire underneath), and sand on top of that. It works GREAT. And San in the wet parts of the run.

Glad you're ok. So scary!

cluckcluckgirl, the only other thing I can think of is you might try some Sweet PDZ, a horse product. I have not tried it yet myself but have heard good things about it. Lime should work as well. For temporary relief you can always dump a bale of shavings on the floor, they will absorb the moisture, but you would want to shovel them back out after a few days so they don't get moldy or mildewy.
