Colorado

So.. it happened. Neighbor called code enforcement, she came out, took a look around and said I WASN'T IN ANY VIOLATION OF CODE especially since my roosters live inside my house in the basement in a special built sound muffling box since April 11th

after having a crow reduction surgery.

The neighbor also complained about SMELL, which there was none.

Neighbor rents, we own. Neighbor rents 2 bedroom house with yard and shed for $850 a month in a very nice neighborhood. I think the neighbor needs to move.

How can one encourage a neighbor to move? I'm so sick of bending over backwards for this neighbor and him making up blatant lies. This is making me so mad and upset. Especially insinuating that my animals are living in filthy unsanitary conditions. Code enforcement took a look around and said she was very impressed with my lay out, cleanliness, obviously I care deeply about my chickens and property.

She said if they complain again the neighbor would have to file a complaint and she would state that she had visited and saw the conditions of the complaint was unfounded.

This really has me so upset!!

I have always believed that if I am following the rules, I will not attempt to appease ridiculous demands by others. You did all you could to be a nice neighbor, some people are just never happy. You're within code, and have tried extremely hard to keep down the noise, I think that's pretty awesome. I, on the other hand, would build a house for my roosters...as close to the property line as legally possible. Of course, my husband buffers my spiteful side, and would make the bachelor pad in the rear of the house.

@Double Kindness That's pretty vexing. I never understand why people do stuff like that, talking out both sides of their mouth. That seems like more work than it's worth. If he didn't like the chickens, why wouldn't he just say that instead of making up a story about someone else having a problem. /smh

Here's the Blue Red.

And here's the Blue.

And here's my dogs checking out the newest chicken nuggets they get to raise. No movement on the last 2 eggs (which kinda sucks because 1 is a Blue Silver), but these little dudes seem to be doing okay so far. If they make it through the night, tomorrow they'll get moved into the brooder box Mercury & Frost are currently in while M & F move into a bigger modified dog cage. Thankfully, they'll be placed next to each other so they can see each other & get used to each other as the newest chicks gain a little more control over their wobbly legs. Hopefully, I can put them all together so they can be in the grow out coop/pen together.

Congrats to DK and Uzi for their latest additions, so cute!

I am over this weather! Cold and drizzling here again. The chickens are over the wet weather and our chicken area is muddy!

Echoing COChix; Grats to all who are hatching!

I have a BA who is going into broody mode, and I'm considering letting her have some eggs and seeing what happens. Every time I go out she's all puffed up in a nesting box... even with nothing under her
hu.gif
When I open the nest box door, she puffs up even more and makes these weird growling/sighing/crooning sounds... She doesn't peck at me and I can put my hand under her and lift her up and out of the nest box into the coop, but she stays in her crouched position even as I lift her and doesn't "stand up" until I have her fully out of the nest box. She keeps going back in after I leave, but has been using different boxes and that concerns me a bit. Oh well, what's a few eggs after all? I think I'll let her give it a go. I have absolutely NO idea what I'll do if she is successful as the enclosure/feeder/waterer isn't set up for broodies/chicks and I have no place else I can move her to

Once the chicks jump down from the nest box, there's no way they can get back in it either... too high up from the floor. Ah well... we'll see..

Sorry you're over this weather... I am LOVING it! Things here have been so dry and we need this moisture! I'm especially glad the mnts/foot hills are getting up to 3' of snow (sorry Margie)! I know it won't lift water restrictions but it will sure help us this coming summer. It really amazes me that as water becomes more and more precious and limited, the big developers just keep building more and more subdivisions encouraging more and more people to move here... and of course being HOA types they all require perfect yards with lots of grass and other water intensive plants. That limited resource is having to stretch thinner and thinner... In a few more years, I think I'll be moving from here to a place where water isn't an issue, land and the cost of living are cheaper, government regulations/restrictions are less, and population densities are substantially lower. Am I sounding anti-social? Anyway, Hope some of you at least can enjoy this cool wet weekend!

Can you section off a corner of the coop for her and put a ground level nest box in there?
I tried it with my silly cochin but I think I did not wait long enough for her to get used to it before trying to give her a couple chicks.
Even using some of the cheap plastic fencing sold at Home Depot will keep the others from giving her a hard time.
Just a thought on why she keeps switching boxes..... The other hens here keep running my cochin out of the box to get in and lay an egg so she moves to the next nest box.

You are so much braver than I could be. I think it is awesome that you have hatched not once but twice now. Cute little chicks each time too.

Yes I am totally over the wet weather too. I had wanted to get the garden tilled and do some work around here this weekend.
Not going to happen now though.
All the chickens are enjoying having some fresh hay in the run to scratch around in while still having dry feet.

Snowing on and off here today, but most of it is already melted! YAY, pasture should be coming in nice with our next warm up.

Ditto on the developers, they keep building, even though the water resources are become less and less, not sure what they are thinking! MO, TN, and KY still have some cheap land, if you can stand the bugs and humidity!

Uzi, they should all get alongs they are close in hatching. Sometime the the little ones are more feisty too!

Hope a few of mine go broody, would like to let them hatch out a few chicks.

Nice day here today. Snow trying to melt, but it only made it to 38 degrees today. With nearly 2 feet of snow, the only melting is in the horse corral and where we have plowed. DD was supposed to have a track meet here today that was cancelled. The joys of spring in the Rockies is upon us!!

Thanks so much, everyone! I don't think I was brave, just had bad timing that forced me to do 2 hatches instead of 1. :)

I should have named these 2 Sid & Nancy.

I hadn't really realised how big the 4wk olds had gotten until these 2 hatched. Even with the Blue being a T-Rex compared to the Blue Red, they are so tiny! For right now, each pair is in separate brooder boxes. They can still see & hear each other, though. The older 2 are in a "I'm Tougher Than You" phase right now, so it might be easier for the 2 younger chicks to be in the other box by themselves so they can get steadier on their feet & learn to eat & drink.
