Congrats on the babies....can't wait for the pictures! She might or might not go back to the eggs. If she doesn't more than likely those eggs were not viable. That has been my experience, mama knows when know more babies will hatch.

When the broody got up with her chicks I picked the eggs up left in the nest and tried to see if they were developed or not ( couldn't tell), then I put them back. Oh I also put a few under a bantam that just went broody not knowing if the first broody would go back...after all this time of me not messing with the eggs I do this...anyway...I went and looked this morning and it looks like at least one more hatched under the first broody and the bantam has one chick under her now.
So, what is that? At least 8 chicks?
I'm ok with that.

Was planning on starting early to do yard work, but side tracked till noon so waited till a little later to start. Spent the past 2.5 hours weed whacking edges and mowing edges in prep for the lawn tractor. Still will only get 1/2 the yard done today... will have to get back at it tomorrow.

Had to crawl under the nest boxes to collect an egg, and I found ONE very active long legged chick and it's momma. Ohh, and I thought I was going to be the only one who didn't get any.this year. I do stuff every day to promote the culture of chickens, and it's a lot more work than I had ever imagined it would be.

Good luck wth your goslings, PC. They look a handful.

@LS, so much weed eating! You remind me to be grateful I live in a field and don't have to mow. Should knock it down, though. Hope you recover from your virtuosity, but I know you won't. I have been working on putting together the cheapest shed I could find. Will want to share pics when it's done, a month of Sunday's from now. Did Harley have a nice time out? What have you got planned for Memorial Day?

Congrats on the unexpected momma and chick! Do you know/can you tell who the daddy is/was? How old does it look? Any idea how long they've been hiding under there?

I'm kinda in a crippled state with a weak hand (not sure but believe arthritis) and bad knee (no clue there either), but if you'd like a hand with the shed, I'd be more than willing to lend one. I have a couple days experince pounding on things with a hammer

As I'm sure you figured out... ANY time Harley is out and about, all involved have a purely wonderful & exhilarating time

Normally that encompasses Harley and yours truly. No big plans for memorial day... Probably just relax and reflect on/about those less fortunate than I... I served and retired. Many before me served and never came home... That's the reason for the weekend after all. Several of the men I served with are no longer with us... not all service related, but still. How bout you? Family get together perhaps? BBQ with friends?

Coop is in the yard!

And chickens are in it!

So exciting :) I have a couple tweaks to make (the roosts didn't come the way I thought they would but should be easily modified) but otherwise it's lovely and holding chickens quite well.

Ohhh, thank you so much for offering to help me with the shed.

I am sorry you have to put up with arthritis; it's not fun. The shed is for the SIL of a former landlady, a good friend. The SIL is himself a good friend who needs some space to store his stuff, and he is helping. He lives in Lafayette and divides much of his time between between his construction job and his youngish family, so the going is slow. Clamps and small power tools are what help me with all the screws and bolts in the meantime. The SIL is very handy - with very handy friends and family - and he needs to keep his level of involvement high since it is for his use. I know you would indeed be happy to help, but the job is covered.

Does shifting the great Harley bother the arthritis? in your hands? Have not ever ridden a bike, but have heard that it requires some strength in your hands. I should say thank you for serving, but it seems so mild and trite an expression for what you did. I will be thinking of you next weekend, and "Thank you." No, I am not planning any sort of celebration; all of my family are very distant from me. Maybe a BBQ with my friends who live here, but we've not talked about it.

Mmmmmm, there are 3 roosters in the coop with that hen - an RIR (named Harley), an SS, and an RIR-SS hybrid. The chick looks over one week old, and the mama looks like an RIR, but since she went Broodie, I'm guessing she is an SSxRIR cross from one of my previous hatches. She had been sitting eggs for awhile, and when she got off the nest, I found a number of unhatched eggs and thought she'd abandoned it. The chick had about a 3 foot jump to the floor ( deep littered). She is keeping the chick in a rather separated area under the nesting boxes and it will be interesting to see when she brings it out. I do hope it's a hen. Happy first day of the week.
