Too bad Tiny wont be so tiny in about 4 weeks!

P-Funk, I am SO SORRY the snow monster wont leave you alone. That's one good thing about living in the Fountain Valley area. We are a little more protected and miss a lot of crud. So far I haven't had to recover the plants, but I am watching www.weatherbug.com quite closely. It's drizzling like mad right now. The ducks are in heaven!

Its been raining / drizzling here in Modway all night and morning. We have been so dry the ground is soaking it all up! This is great. its great of course until we attempt to drive out in an hour.... two miles of dirt or in this case, mud!

Thanks, 'Zilla for not taking me too seriously on the topic of 'DH'. Hey, at least the rain is washing the snow away:celebrate The girls ventured out to the run today but the pasture makes me wish I owned a speedboat.

Hi all! I live in Highlands Ranch and am thinking about getting Chickens for fun and eggs! Which are the best chickens for Colorado????
Also do you heat your coop in the winter?

Cacky: Glad he made it there and is getting used to your ladies. Did you let him in with them yet? (You mentioned Sunday morning as when the WussRoo will be leaving!). Be sure to take a pic.

Nora: Wonderful to meet you and family at the animal swap. Gavin's a cutie! As soon as our goat babies are born, we'll make plans for you guys to come up and play!

Jenn: Nope, don't heat in the winter. Believe it or not, chickens are really pretty hardy. Be sure, tho, to carefully choose your breeds. First, what do you want them for (meat, eggs, or dual purpose-both). Then, egg color (white, brown, blue/green). Then try to get rose combs because they don't freeze as easily as the single comb does. Ask around here ... people will give you their opinions.

Sold all of our chicks within 30 minutes of being at the Kiowa animal swap. Gonna have to plan better next year ... sell chicks and goat babies. But for this year ... still no goat babies. I KNOW she's pregnant because I can see them kicking her sides and she's HUGE but come on ... the waiting! And in the almost-constant rain. Still more expected over the next week, in addition to snow. I have more chicks ready to go outside but kinda wanna wait until this weather is done and back to sunshiney. I'm so sick with a fever and the chils from this weather ... going out every few hours to push the rain off the chicken-coops tarps.

GreenEgz I have to dissagree Re: heated coop. When it hit 20 below in January my RI got frostbite in a heated barn. It was just on her comb but she looks better now with the bag balm treatment. Jenn if you lived in southern California I'd say don't worry, but we are in Colorado. Rhode Islands and Barred Rocks seem to be popular around here, though I don't think any specific breed is invincible.

P-Funk: I had black australorps (single comb) and easter eggers (pea combs). The b.a.'s got a little frostbite, especially the rooster, but none of the eggers did. We didn't have actual barns or chicken houses for them .... just dog kennels, covered in tarps and as insulated as possible with cardboard boxes. Plenty of ventilation. Identical for both groups.

Just saying... this was MY experience.
