Colorado

Hey there @GoldenMamaHen Welcome to BYC and the Colorado thread! So sorry you ended up with a roo you can't keep. It's really a shame that all these towns "allow" you to have a couple of chickens, but no roos, so no way to reproduce your own... I'm leaving CO later this month for TX and rural living with no city codes or regs to restrict what I do on my land. I think you may have trouble finding a home for him vice a date with a stew pot... It's really difficult to find long term homes for roos along the front range. If you read back in this thread a ways, there have been others discussing this.

Anyway, glad you joined up and stopped by! Feel free to visit when you have the desire and make yourself at home. The CO group really is a pretty great group of folks

Welcome goldenmama hen! I am new here as well, new to chickens too.

Have you called Wardle feed? The web site says they are taking Roo's but not sure how updated that is, or what they do with them? I hope you find him a great home. Love his name too! I am an avid Tudor buff. :)

My run is coming along! Next level is framed. It is going to have a pocket door on the front so I dont have to swing it outwards. Tomorrow I am going to finish adding the chicken wire/hardware cloth layer on the ground before adding more dirt. Then will build the track for the door, then will build the door to fit exactly so there are no openings or holes that bad things can get through. The a front panel will go on to create the "pocket".

Eventually I will have raised garden beds where the grass is for my herb garden.

aim0474 I did see Wardle. Facebook said the charge $15 to drop off the rooster and they cage them and sell them. But, I don't like it there. It seems very dirty and I don't like the attitude I get from the employees. I prefer working with Golden Mill. I'm thinking of giving the velcro collar a try. Not sure how tight to do it though. I don't want to hurt him.

Thanks Latestarter! I had one guy on craigslist offer to let King Henry out into the wild in the mountains. Some people are crazy haha. He wouldn't last a night!

I have a hard time remembering that other people dont think if chickens as pets like I do. I would never do that to any animal, let alone a pet!

I will have to check out Golden Mill. We got our chicks at Wardle & the employee who helped us was very nice. I can see what you mean about it being dirty though.

Helle everyone from the Palmer Divide! I'm not much of computer fan but I sure have learned a lot being on this site. I hope to get to know more Coloradans on here as it sure does help to get advice from those who know a little of what your dealing with.
My husband and I have had a huge range of animals over the years but this year we decided it was time for chickens!!
We currently have 6 pullets all 5 to 9 weeks, various breeds and a 5 month old white rock who has been laying for about 5 weeks.
We have lots of the property fenced as we want the girls to free range as much as they can but we have every type of predator you can think of in CO so therefore they can never truly just roam.
We also have a big Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Ben who does a great job protecting our property and the chickens, even though I know he wants to eat them :)
I hope to get to know you all and look forward to hearing stories, getting advice and just talking chickens....

Where abouts are you at? @Mtn Margie Over here I have a low of 40 and highs in the 60 everyday next week. That's still fine with me, but I do have anxiety about my 1st winter with the chickens..... I keep thinking there will be something I did not think about and it will make my life that much more difficult. Does anyone have CO advice for me? Maybe something you learned over the years that was a winter issue. Woke up this morning to haze covering the sun and the smell of smoke. I hope there is not a fire out there affecting anyone, be safe!
