Colorado

This thread has been very quiet this summer.

Welcome to the newcomers!
Perhaps with new faces we will have new things to chat about.

I don't know the rules for Colorado Springs sadly. I do hope you find the answers. Geese can be rather loud when they choose to.

Uzi, As always your birds are fantastic! I am joining you in the job searching. After 9 years I finally had enough. I hope for good things for both of us in our searching.

For those who have not met me before... I am the proud keeper of several breeds of hens. I keep bantam Cochin, Black Australorp, Brahma, buff Orpington, among others.
This year I added giant Cochin and Barnevelder. Such pretty birds they have grown to be.

Well off to fix dinner.

Hi everybody,
We live in Colorado Springs and my mom really likes geese and has been wanting them for a while now, so we were wondering if geese are allowed in the city.
- Thanks :)
Welcome to the Colorado thread. I lived in the Springs before moving out to Peyton. Rules for the Springs are you can have up to 10 backyard fowl including geese. However, I would recommend doing research to find a breed that isn't noisy, or overly noisy. They can be pretty loud. I hear the ones from down the street all the time. Your neighbors may complain and then it would be treated as a noise complaint, same a dog that barks all the time.

Ok thank you. Someone in our neighborhood, about a street over got geese and we can hear them from our house, so we were just wondering. The birds we have now are chickens and ducks, not that we need any more, my mom just likes them. As of now our ducks are probably the closest thing she'll get to geese.

Haha, I certainly don't mind hearing all the birds around me. I think it's fun to hear all the roosters crowing in the morning. I would defiantly say the sounds made by the geese carries further than any of the others (expect maybe the peacock but haven't heard him in a while) but they aren't constantly making noise. Everyone has good sized lots so we are all spread out but I could see people getting upset if they were in close proximity.

@uzisuzuki How do you know all your peas are male? I thought you had to wait a really long time before they showed any gender specific feathering. What do plan to do with them if they are male? Don't they wonder away if there are no mates near by?

My neighbors aren't big fans of the ducks but thus far nobody has complained. The rooster doesn't make a racket, so I'm not worried about him, just the ducks. They are my loud mouths.

You can tell by the feathers on their shoulders/back/wings. If they develop any barring, they're male. All 3 of mine developed barring fairly early on. Plus, at the rate I'm going, I'm pretty much assuming all I'll ever hatch are males! :D

I'm going to keep them. They imprinted on me pretty hard (or vice versa) & I can't imagine giving them up. I love them so much. It's ridiculous. They might wander, that's always a possibility, so I've been thinking of getting them banded or microchipped. I don't let any of the birds out if I'm not there to watch them, and I did have to chase down the adults a few times that first year they were living with me. If I can ever find another job or start making money with my small business, I would like to get a few more penhens just to keep the peace. Once they get a little bigger (next month or so), they'll have their own pen/run that's separate from their parents.

Interesting about the barring. I didn't know that. Would love to see some updated pictures.

I know what you mean about hatching so many males. It seems like at least 3 of the 5 older EEs are males. Another one is kind of iffy. I also only got 9 females out of 24 quail from my restart batch. Of course all the pretty silver ones turned out to be male. It means the lady I got 20 of them from also hatches more males than females. The ones I hatched last year were mostly males too. Not great odds there but at least in that case I am raising for meat so it's not as bad.

Speaking of quail. I finally got my new flock of breeders outside. It had been taking so long because I wanted to put a roof over the run this time as apposed to just patching some tarps together. I found about these things called kennel bows that are designed for dog kennels. Took me a while to get it up by myself and the tarp I got turned out to be way bigger than I needed but the kennel now has a nice waterproof roof. Thanks to the extra tarp coming down the side the wind can't really catch inside to the lift it up. I don't know how it will hold up to the snow though. I also made sure to patch the hole the skunk made and added extra wire in other places. The quail were very happy to be outside, especially the girls as there are way fewer boys to deal with. It's funny to see so few of them running around in that huge dog run.

I'll try to get some pictures this afternoon when I get back from another job interview. They aren't as clingy to me as they used to be, which, of course, makes me both sad and happy. They're definitely more interested in investigating things on their own, unless I'm going to the barn to get everyone snacks. Then they like me. :)

Here's a few recent pictures of my three sons. I'm not 100% sure what they'll end up looking like. I think Mim (the smallest) will end up looking like Damien (a regular peacock), Fin is showing signs of being pied (splotches of white randomly) & Sy looks like he's going to be black shouldered.
