My chooks have learned, I guess. I did not see them in their run yesterday and out of concern I went out to investigate. When I got to the door of the run I heard them but did not see them. It was only when I got inside I saw them low crawling towards me with the typical expectant look of "feed us something yummy". So, there you have it. Chooks can low crawl.

Woo!!!!!!! 400 pages of posts! Everyone celebrate with another chicken!

Hi fellow mealworm farmers and chicken horders!!! The weather up here is raining and cold. Snowing up in the mountains but not here yet.
Mealworms take a bit longer to cycle than 2 weeks. You can have a new generation in approx 3 months. Mommato hang in there. The dead beetles just means that you have tons of tiny worms growing in you substrate. Put in a slice of bread, leave it for a day and then lift the bread. Look at the underside and you will see loads of baby worms.
Ryan, mealworms are about the easiest thing that you have ever grown. You can invest as much or as little time into in that you would like. But BEWARE, mealworm farming is addicting. I swore that I would have a 1 bin system and not be moving pupae all the time. That was 3 generations ago!!!
I am now feeding a decent amount of worms to my girls about once a week. The chickens love them and i enjoy being able to grow a portion of their feed. AND they are easier to raise than our kids!! Worms don't talk back!!

Good to meet you today Stickers!! We were right next to you with the cochin hens. The wind just blew us out.... grit in eyes, mouth, couldn't run the little heater for chicks. Then once back in Golden was totally calm.....
We have these chicks available locally and I'd placed them on C.R. too....

What the heck?! So I have 8 pullets, and tonight I collected a white egg from I don't know who.......I have 2 Welsummers and I think both of them are laying. I have never gotten 2 dark brown eggs at the same time so I don't know, but the one tonight was a little smaller than usual and had blood on it. My EE is laying greenish blue eggs, and they are kind of bullet shaped. My Sex-link lays a pinkish brown egg. My Jersey Giant has started laying and she lays a GIANT light pinkish egg. My Silkie lays a white egg almost every day, but I got one from her too today. That leaves my Buckeye (6 monthsish and not one egg yet) and my Bantam Cochin who I bought post brooding and I have never gotten an egg from her. Who is this egg from?!?!?! It is driving me nuts! It is a bit bigger than my Silkie eggs are, and rounder too. Someone PLEASE help me, it is making me CRAZY!!!!!

Ok you're on the list for a Blue boy!

Thanks it was good to meet you too! You have some really nice birds. The wind was sooo bad the place was cleared out by 10 . Loved that little heater you had for the chicks, what did you run it off?

I haven't seen any signs of life yet! But I have read it can take a couple of months of inactivity before you start seeing the new mealies. My house also a bit colder, upper 60's, low 70's so that could be slowing them down as well. I'll just be patient.

They do not need light. Actually, I believe they prefer the dark. I have 5 high maintenance kids! LOL Everything from gifted to autistic but not one that fits into *normal.*

I am going to try throwing some bread in there and see what happens! The beetles lived at least 2 months so I would assume there HAS to be babies in there! I sure would like to see proof of them, though.....
