Colorado

So here is our little flock. They are Catherine of Aragon, top left, dark brown Ameraucana, Anne Boleyn, yellow striped Ameraucana, Jane Seymour, Production Red, Anne of Cleves, Buff Orpington, and Catherine Howard, Barred Rock. Anne Boleyn turned out to be the agressive one. She was the first chick we got and was alone for part of a day before we got C of A. I stayed with them and introduced the little ones to food and water. Anne B. would come up and try to chase them from the water and the food, so I intervened and made sure that the new ones knew where the water was, and watched them drink, and knew where the food was. Anne started picking especially on CH, the Barred Rock, maybe because she the largest of the three new ones. I protected her at first and isolated Anne B three separate times in the little transport box for a few minutes each time. It seemed to help because the new ones could then go freely from place to place and establish themselves while she was gone, and when I introduced her back, they seemed more like a flock of chickens. We have one more to get which will come in on the 19th, a black astralorp and of course she will be Catherine Barr, the last of the six wives of Henry the 8th.

We moved a carrier into the barn with her 4 eggs lastnight and she layed a 5th in there during the night. I actually bought an incubator to incubate her eggs but I don't want to take that away from her if she's wanting to do the work herself. How many eggs on average do they sit on. I did hit the goose thread up but sometimes our Colorado peeps holler back quicker

Yeah, geese aren't known for their nice manners during breeding and gosling season. The ones that hatch should be more respectful of your space when they get older, in general. I don't know how many eggs is just right for a goose. Guess you will be able to tell us. Keep us in the loop please!

Newchicknmomma..........great looking chicks. Just a word of caution tho. I have read many times on here that it is not good to have the chicks on newspaper as it is too slick for them and may cause leg injuries (I think I read splayed leg). The simple solution seems to be putting paper towels down. I'm totally new, so just passing on what I have read.

Thanks so much for the headsup. I did the newspaper because at Elizabeth Country Store in Elizabeth, Colorado, they had a sheet for starting out with baby chicks and one of the tips was to cover the shavings with newspaper for the first three days to prevent the chicks from eating the shavings. Today was the first day for the newest three so I figured I would go two more days and then just go to shavings. I do have paper towels so I will use those for the next two days instead of the newspaper. Thanks! How are your chicks doing? I'm getting one more ..an Astralorp on the 19th and that will be our flock. :) Amazingly, our agressive older chick has calmed down and they all cuddled up together to sleep tonight. I'm so glad. :)

I would use paper towels instead...they aren't as slick. Just a suggestion.

We did the newspaper thing too and then after reading a lot about splayed legs and all moved to paper towels. Also, I had trouble even at day 5 with the babies eating the pine shavings so we used paper towels again until they were about 12 days old...

BTW - they are adorable! Mine are now out of the cutie baby chick stage...makes me want to run out and get a few more...but 54 chickens is enough for now, especially since I have two babay goats coming in the next 2 months.

Hi ttclan,
Wow! 54 chickens!! You surely have your hands full!! I started using the paper towels this morning. We are planning to get one more chick on the 19th--a black astralorp. You must have a very large coop and lots of room for them to run!! Did they all make it ok? Any trouble with predators?

Too bad I didnt't get that flyer from Elizabeth, I put my chicks directly onto shavings as was concerned about how many of them they seemed to be eating. Doesn't seem to have done them any harm tho, so I guess it's ok.

My chicks, thankfully, are doing great and growing rapidly. I have had them for two weeks today, just 2 BA's and 2 BR's from Elizabeth, but will be getting 2 Welsummers from Kiowa on the 23rd, and then 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes on 4/6 from Elizabeth. The GLW's were somewhat of an impulse buy. Wanted 8 birds, and there wasn't much else I was interested in. Decided to buy them just because they are pretty, and I didn't see anyone saying anything negative about them. Now I've read a few threads that make me think they may be a little more aggresive than I wanted.

All my chicks have been housed in my coop since the day I got them and the cold weather hasn't phased them. I still have to put roosts in the coop, and have another 2-3 days work until the run is totally fenced (I'm about to kill myself with all the fence work). Main fence is up, just diggin in the hardware cloth apron now, and making the gates. Will be glad when all that is done and I can start working on my garden. Boy retirement is a lot more work than working. This weather makes me want to PLANT something. Sheesh 2 months til May 15, my normal planting day, LOL.

I'm a little worried that my 2nd BR may be a roo even tho purchased as a pullet. One of my BR's has great wing feathers, a start on a tail and is already getting some coloring, but the other is feathering out much slower. I read somewhere on here that roos are slower to feather out. Oh well, lots of opinions on here I'll just have to wait and see.

Good luck with your chicks.
