Colorado

Hi all,

Wondering if there are enough of us in Colorado Springs that would want to have a small get together...coffee shop?

I'm a super newbie. No coop, no chicks yet... all down on paper. Just waiting for a rich benefactor ! Man, this can be expensive to get going. Designed a 7' A frame coop/run... lumber about $150 and imagining wire to be about the same...and then paint and siding and... whatever.

If there is anyone out there that wants to show off your coop/set up, I'd love to come out and take a peek. I'm quite sure I haven't thought of everything to make the UBER Coop ( ;

If you become a Craigslist fanatic, shop a recycle center and an eagle eye garage saler or junkie for the clearance aisle, you will be able to gather all of the supplies to build an awesome coop and run. It may take a bit more time and creativity, but it will not be very expensive at all. You can get free pallets and tear them down to rebuild what you want.

AND if you want paint and aren't particular of the colors, you can go to the El Paso county household hazardous waste dropoff center just off Marksheffel and Constitution. FREE PAINT! We picked up 18 gallons.

Here is what we did this afternoon before the thunderstorm chased us inside...

Much of our small coops were built from re-purposed lumber. -
We had to buy lumber for the fence, and some of the sheathing, but most of the rest was for free. I am UBER-cheap!

and the Colorado thread!

Wow Smith, great progress. I went down to the chicken show at the fairgrounds today and was thinkin about you as I passed Midway. You are at the stage now where a picture of completion should be in your head. With you sitting in a lawnchair with your favorite beverage watchin the chicks do their thing.

The show in Pueblo was small, mostly bantams (sigh). I KNOW they are chickens, but I really was hoping to see more standard breeds so that I can get some ideas for what I want to add to my flock next year. They DID have some standard BR's. Sure pointed out to me the difference between my hatchery stock and GOOD breeder stock. That's ok, I still like my girls and I'm only in it for the eggs and the amusement.

Been trying to catch a darn mouse that I found in my henhouse, but I have to be careful cuz I can't have the pullets getting into the trap. No luck so far, but that mouse is gonna be history. I suspect it's been in there a month or so, as I saw a spot of disturbed dirt about then that my first instinct was that a mouse had dug in from somewhere. But as I couldn't find the opposite side hole outside the house, I talked myself into thinking it was a hole the hens dug to dustbathe in. Wrong, moved the paver I had my food sitting on the other day and there was the freaking mouse. Oh well, trials and tribulations. That's what life is about.

Getting together in CS.....not a bad idea. I'm kinda a loner, but I'd meet once in awhile. I suspect my coop and setup are not what you have in mind Mo, as it falls way short of the UBER coop, but I'd be glad to post some pics for you if you want. Basically an 8 X 10 sub ground level, open sided coop, deep litter with a run that's about 16 X 20. There are many coop pics posted on the coop thread.

Dufus, photos would be cool.

I was sort of kidding about the uber coop. Guessing my coop will fall somewhere between the plywood box and the super chix condo. In this early stage of research I have seen the gamut. Probably a mix of new and used materials.

Had the idea of getting a chicken group together after doing the Coop Tour a few weeks back. People seem to really excited about "talking chicken" and showing off their chicken digs. I'm als not espically social, but thinking this new endevor might be an oportunity to branch out.

a get together might be fun. I was thinking of having an "open house" or something like that when i get to some stage of completion, but knowing me I will just continue building something.........

Dufus, you should have stopped by! We got chased into the house a little after 2PM, and didn't get back outside until much laterm and then didn't do much. Picked up a bit... laughed at the chicks in the brooder.

Dufus, 1 mouse!!! 1 mouse!! I'll trade you your 1 mouse for say........100's
