Definately a "Cheerful" coop!

Mine are more for function as well, but they are painted, and as soon as we get the trim on, I will post some photos. Mine don't have murals on them, just a whitish base coat of paint and a contrasting color trim. One has bright orange trim.

Got the rest of the screening on the vents yesterday afternoon, trim cutting and installation today after work.

here's our latest efforts.
We decided our run needed more protection (even though the coop is still inside our garage)
Here are some picts. We built up the gate so the wall goes to the top of the fence. Then added
hardware cloth along the inside edge of the run area. Then we put in some vertical garden beds.
Thought this might add some color and beauty to our run. I planted spinach, thyme, swiss chard,
lettuce and some flowers in a checkerboard pattern. I can't wait to see what it looks like once up!
still not done yet, but since we have another 9 days of waiting, I've got time to get everything done.

Here's a question... is there any way to make a chicken play nice? I have 4 chicks which are 6 to 7 weeks old. And the Amercauna is the meanest. She charges and jumps on the other 3. I wish I could do something to make her behave better. My other 3 are soo calm and docile and the Amercauna is the frenzy starter. Any suggestions? Would it help to separate her a bit each day?

Talk about playing nice...

Our cherries are rippening and the Robins and Black Birds are bringing their fledglings into the yard to feed on the cherries. These little newby pilots usually crash into the yard a few times each day and the pulletts have been running them down and pecking them.I've had to rescue several of these little guys over the last few days. My girls do not play nice at all.

Unless you see blood, it is best to let chicken playground politics work themselves out.

Just read it on line. You know, as a kid, we were always told to keep our hands out of our mouths, eyes, and noses, and it was a cardinal rule that our hands be washed after being with any of our livestock, chickens included. We also had to remove any filth from our shoes if they came into the house.
Sounds like the large hatchery in NM had some salmonella issues for a while.
I wonder if the article was written as an educational piece, or if it was an attempt to alarm and create an issue where no issue really exists? Salmonella can become a problem, but how many people really are getting it from chickens? and compare the figures stated to other diseases and madadies. Comparatively, its probably a pretty low occurance.
Just my thoughts.

I agree. The pecking order must become established, and unless there is real damage being done, let them sort it out.

We need to remember that chickens have a social order within each flock or group, and us interferring unnecessarily has the potential to make things worse, or even prolong those issues.
