ChickInTheBurbs I have been smitten by your Summer and I would love to add a Buff Brahma bantam to my flock. If anyone hears of a young pullet (3-4 months) please please please let me know! I have made a call to one breeder I know and he is going to see if anyone he knows has one. I never thought I would want a feather footed bird but I really do!

Wsmith, hope this week goes better for Beth!

I am thinking a predator got two of my girls today, one very old girl and one that had struggled with a broken leg? or other injury that had left her with a bum leg. I guess that is that. Nothing like splitting wood with the splitter and not being able to hear stuff going on!!! Amazing how it only took the weak ones though, really like they were making a Nature show.
Thanks! she's feeling better today than all the week combined!

I watched a hawk fly over today, and all the Dominiques ran for cover, while the EEs stood around as if they were wondering where everyone else was going!

Very glad that Beth is feeling better. I had a crow come to visit my coop area last week. It was pretty amazing at how big it was in comparison to how small some of my chickens are. He hasn't been back. I read that crows are good to have around for chickens.

coloradogal, what makes crows good to have around for chickens? Just curious. We have a plethora of birds here, from hummingbirds all the way up to eagles, and just about everything in between including crows.

I've heard that as well. Not sure why, and I haven't seen crows around much.
Just looked it up. Apparently, crows will eat neglected eggs, and perhaps even small chicks, though its not common. The thing that is beneficial is that crows and hawks hate each other, so if you have crows around frequently, your chances of experiencing a hawk attack on your chickens goes down. The crows will apparently gang up on the hawks to protect their own young and drive the hawk away.

Crows keep hawks and owls away from the chickens.

Yup. It isn't a pretty sight to see a bunch of crows go after a hawk. Some people have said they will attack baby chicks but it isn't common. I think crows are just too smart to feel threatened by chickens and perhaps they have a kindred for them. The wistful side of me like to believe that crows will take baby chicks to try to raise as their own when they loose their own chicks.

Whew. Yes I read every single post took me a week but I got it done. I live in Strasburg East of Denver. I've got major chicken math going on. I truely do not know how many chickens I have. But its more then fifty. I have had chickens on and off for 20 years only because of college and living in an area that didnt accept chickens. I look forward to interacting with everyone here.

Also on that note I have a EE rooster around 20 weeks Im assuming. I dont know his exact hatch date but he is this seasons hatch. I was planning on getting EE hens but then decided otherwise.

Last year I ordered chicks and they threw in a bantam Antwerp Belgian, Belgian Bearded D'Anver. Why a bantam with standard chicks I have no idea but he needs a home too.

If you need pictures let me know.
