Now why would you "can" a food item that is available year round in every grocery and corner store and has a shelf life of 15 years?

There's a storm coming and it's always nice to have a pantry full for when it hits.

It's also a lifestyle too. I save tons of money by buying things when they are on sale and not when I need it. So I picked up peanut butter when it was a $1 a bottle last year and am still working through my stash... same goes with most everything else. Buy the veggies in the fall when they are usually inexpensive, can them and have them until the next fall. I always try to put enough ahead to get through if personal tragedy (unexpected bill or loss of job) or even community tragedy (blizzard) should happen. It's always been this way in my family and I'm surprised at how often, even in my short life, I or close friends have had to rely on it. I may lose my job in about 2 months so everything that I can put aside now when I have the extra to spend will be one less thing I have to buy when it happens.

Totally agreed. Plus the added advantage of knowing exactly what's IN the food you're eating...and the fact that it tastes sooooo much better! Next year, we plan on putting in a much, much bigger garden so we won't even have to buy a lot of veggies...so the cost will be even more greatly reduced. I get lots of fresh fruit off craig's list which I can so that we don't have to buy it either.

That is excatly what I am learning for. Plus my chicken cheese soup is an all day event and I can not eat 3 gallons by my self in one day.

P.S. I was out of work mostly for three years, so if I ever have to face that again we will be better off.

I did want to say the strawberry black cherry jam and the golden raspberry jam came out perfect so yesterday was not a total loss, just the loss of it's star. I need to get the golden raspberry jam to my father-in-law since I hate raspberries to be sure the taste is good but it should be. We went to picking berries Saturday so I have tons of jam to make.
