If you do order from Duane Urch I an definitely interested in going in on an order. I can't do 25 chicks this spring by myself. I already have lots of birds. From what I heard he sells out early so the order needs to go in sometime in January probably.

Sounds good! We have a little while to get an order together, so I guess anyone who is interested in being part of a large order can just PM me when they know what they want to order and we will work out the details of payment and pickup. Probably should have a cutoff date. Meantime I'll try to give him a call and just go over details, typical availability of each breed he sells, etc. Also we will have to pick a delivery week. His price list indicates he ships January through May I believe.

I could probably go in for a few Dominiques straight run or pullets from Urch/Turnland if you need to fill up an order.

Question, how many of you have had a hen crow? I either have a hen that hes learned to crow or a wild bird (magpie / bluejay ) that has learned to crow or an escaped young meatie that has defied the predator odds and never been seen by the human eye (unlikely). I have a back-up crow, at the crack of dawn once every now and then ??? I am thinking hen, but it would be cool if it were a wild bird.

Do you have a mockingbird maybe? We have one that imitates an eagle cry. Rather disconcerting at times :)

Just got an email from the CSU Colorado Avian Disease Surveillance program people. They will be testing my flock on the morning of the 19th!

Woo hoo! They can be slow sometimes - I finally got my paperwork and invoice from them the last week of September, mailed it back, still don't have my NPIP # and my check has not been cashed. Oh well. My little flock of 7 isn't as pressing a matter as the larger flocks across the state, I'm sure.

What was the cost per bird? At the time of testing, I will have 18.

I also need to find a couple more cages. I only have enough at the place to cage about 10.

It was just a cost per flock, $12 includes the two tests they do on every flock, and then for an extra $30 I had mine tested for the kind of salmonella that gets into the eggs. My gals all got a clean bill of health :) When I asked for the third test she asked if I sold eggs, and I said, well no, but we eat them ... :)

I know nothing of shipping chicks...... Can they be safely shipped January or February? Will it be to cold in Colorado during these months?
