Murdocks is not "sophisticated" enough for us poultry people to finds what we needs

Search "poultry supplies" on yahoo and you should come up with quite a few matches of companies that sell a wide selection of waterers. I am trying to think of some off the top of my head but it's been a long day.

We got our little blue buckets at the feedstore right here in Kiowa. Seems like I've seen them at Big R in Elizabeth and they may even be available at some place like Pet Smart or Pet.....whatever the other place is since they're supposed to be for dogs I think.

Hey from east of Colorado Springs!

I don't have any chickens yet, but an so excited to learn about them and get started.

I would love to hear from anyone with helpful tips on getting started.

Also, anyone sellng any laying chickens? Craigslist has some listings, but since I don't know anything about chickens yet, I didn't want to buy any sick ones.

Look forward to getting to know you all.

Julie

Welcome Julie!
Getting started is as easy as getting some kind of structure for your chickens for shelter (winter can be hard for chickies) and my preference is for a fenced run as we have plenty of predators in this area (I'm just a little north of you). I don't have any chickens for sale right now but I will have in the spring. Be very careful of chickens for sale on Craigslist as it's very hard for a beginner to tell the age and overall health of a chicken. I know a guy up here by Parker who has some very good (though they're hatchery stock) chickens for sale but they're a little pricey and by the time you compound your drive with it those will be some expensive eggs for awhile.

Any other Colorado Springs and general area...I am looking for someone giving away kittens. I'd like to find a pair of long hairs, one calico, and one white or grey. One male, one female. Yeah, they're getting fixed. Doesn't matter if the same litter or not. But I'd like them to be little. I have looked and replied to a few posts on craigslist and freecycle, but I am not getting very great leads. Old enough to leave mom, but not too much older than that.

Welcome to BYC Julie! My advise is to read, read, read. I might have two soon that will be ready to go. I want to be sure of gender first though. I don't want to give away a rooster and have it be someone elses problem. I want to be able to say that they are definitely rooster or definitely pullet. If they are definitely hens, I will have a few to share.

Otherwise, there's a guy out east, I can't remember his name. What is it...shoot, i can't remember, James I think. He is pretty good about giving pullets when he says they are pullets, and he often has started ones available. Chicks are kind of a crap-shoot as to what you will get unless they are sexlinks. But even then he usually has good ones. I have gotten some from him twice and not had a problem.

Study the pics here of hens and you'll get more and more confident as to what you are looking for.

Julie!! You're down there in the heart of BYC people here in CO. There seems to be quite a few of us down south more so than up here. Good luck finding your new babies. They're a kick in the pants once you get going with them.
