Wow, this place is moving right along! Been busy, so not here as often or long, so playing catch up!

So sorry your girl did not make it, I was hoping she would!

We had two days over 35 degrees so got lots of stuff outside done. We are also redoing our bathroom, so helped that the weather was warmer, as the back door was opena nd closed often.

Hi! The showbirds must be checked in by 2 pm Sunday and there's time to view the birds while showmanship is held nearby. Monday morning does have judging occur which blocks some aisles but then its open after judging ends...the crowds get heavier though after say 10am. Glad to hear u r trekking up, will be great to see some BYC people. I just met dennarahl at th DUH swap yesterday.

Thanks - do you know the NPIP position on purchasing birds at shows? If not I will try to contact them in the morning.

RIP Hattie. I would like to that everyone for their help and support. Hattie passed away this afternoon. She will be missed, she was so sweet and would do anything for a raisin.

I am really sorry for you loss.

She was lucky to have such a caring owner and I am sure she had a great, if not spoiled life.

I am going to taper the girls off the night lighting, I had it off at 9, had a few late nights and forgot it till almost 2 am....

I have a ceramic heater to replace it with, I hope by Wednesday night but I am worried that might be too fast a change and stress them even more. I want to clean the coop before any more snow hits and they are stuck in there again, anyways. I think the Coop is about 25 cubic feet not including the nesting area, and they were good till I added the light.

Did you add the light just for getting heat to them? I found my girls are fine as long as they have plenty of shavings. When the weather got so bad they wouldn't come out, I moved the heated waterer into the coop, which gives off a little warmth (probably not very much), and they never huddled around it, so I really don't think they're cold. Do you have some that are especially prone to the cold? I don't, so my situation might be completely different from yours.

The way the weather's been the last few years, we're not far from warming up anyway - the last few years I've been regretting not getting pre-emergent weed killer down in February, but then wound up not putting any down at all as it turned out, it was so dry even bindweed was dying. I don't really hope for weeds, but sure do hope for some rain this year.

Have you tried using a red lightbulb? Doesn't seem to keep them awake a much while still providing the same amount of heat

I received an incubator for Christmas, and decided to try a few eggs to figure out the whole process. Out of 4 eggs, I possibly have 2 growning. 1 for sure, and the second is a green egg that the light can't penetrate, but pretty sure I can see veins. I can't see the embryo. If it turns out I only get 1 chick, will it be ok by itself? The chickens are very social, and I didn't know if I am setting myself up for failure. Thank you in advance.

At what day did you candle? I have a rule that I never candle until at least 2 weeks in and again right before hatch. Sometimes it's just too difficult to see even with a candler lamp. Maybe its just me because I tend to incubate dark eggs.

If you only get one chick, just don't put it out until its around the same size as the others but it should be ok. When's hatch day?

It's always best for them to have a friend or two. I would recommend looking around for someone selling chicks in your area just in case you get a single chick.
