Today is a homemade potato soup for dinner kind of day I think... Bacon, potatoes, celery, maybe some carrots, thick sauce made with butter...........Fresh rolls.........

I made that for lunch! Definatly a day for warm soup/ chili and hot cider or chocolate!!! I have some ham and bean soup in my crockpot right now....I'll start on rolls in the next couple hours...maybe a pie or cobbler for dessert

Mmmmm. Ham and beans!..... Maybe on Saturday..... It takes me nearly two days to make ham and bean soup.....

Hate to be the one to tell you this but sometimes chickens who have not laid prior to winter, do not start laying until March, when the sunlight gets back up a little.

Yeah, I was resolved to no EE eggs until early spring, but since the squatting and nesting behavior just started in the last week, I'm letting myself be cautiously optimistic.

I see many folks are feeding oatmeal  -- sorry if it's a silly question, but do you cook it (the way you would feed to people) or just throw it out dry?!
I'm always looking to give the girls variety, and then I panic and run to the internet to make sure I didn't just give them something they shouldn't have!! LOL
So far, they LOVE tomatoes (had plenty to share from our garden) watermelon, cantaloupe, left over biscuits, peaches and blueberries, pumpkins and other various gourds.
They won't even touch lettuce, broccoli, or cucumber - they're like babies, want the sweet stuff, and forget vegetables!!  haha

Different flocks can be funny about their food preferences. My girls refused to touch strawberries until I added some new girls who loved them. Scrambles and Sunny were almost two years old before they took that first bite. Oh, and don't forget about meats! My ladies go NUTS for meat scraps and mice. We cooked a rabbit once and it was preseasoned very strangely. They got a leg as we figured we would be unlikely to go back for seconds. Lordy, you would have thought we gave them a golden football. They ran away with, stole and played yank-away with that thing for nearly an hour. I found nothing but bones the next morning.



Separate note, do you think I should calculate the incubator cost as part of our startup since it is a gift?

Hey Yall - new to the thread, but you'll see me posting a lot more now -- we are moving the family to Colorado!!
We are a family of 6, my husband and myself with 3 boys and 1 girl. One son and our daughter are older and "on their own" and are staying behind in Texas, but the two younger boys are coming with us. My husband was recently transferred with the VA and is already there working in Lakewood.
I became interested in chickens a couple years ago and read anything and everything I could about them. This past summer my husband surprised me with "Chickens for My Birthday" (okay, there was a small happy dance that goes with that song, but hard to demonstrate here! LOL) My co-workers at a large banking corporation thought I had lost my mind when I post pics on facebook and talk about how Camile did this, or silly Corrina did that. It's so peaceful to sit there and "talk" with the girls after a stressful work day!.
Then the news, we're moving to Denver... I thought, "WHAT?!?!??! I'm a Texan girl, born and raised - how will I survive the great frozen tundra?!?! Plus, everyone tells me that they don't like Texans up there! " I was terrified! LOL However, I came up for a few days of house hunting two weeks ago, and LOVE IT! It IS beautiful, and everyone we came in contact with was so nice!
The even better news - I don't have to deal with "corporate" anymore - I will be able to stay at home, raise children, chickens, and hopefully more animals. I'm on a self-reliability path and we are working hard at it! (well, daddy has his doubts, but the boys have my back!) I am an avid garder, and I'm looking forward to learning a different climate and growing seasons.
I did post awhile back about how in the world to move chickens cross country (I know, crazy right!) and yall were so much help for me with ideas on how to move my girls from Texas to Colorado. We had it all planned out, and we are ready to go! We made sure to research the property and houses we were buying to confirm that our "livestock" was welcome, etc, etc, etc.....
now the bad news........our closing date for the new house has been pushed out, we replanned and postponed leaving a few days, but now I am headed to Denver in 6 days with three chickens, two boys, and a moving van full of stuff and no place to land!!! Well, Mark has been staying in our RV, but I'm sure the RV park is not going to welcome our girls!!
HELP! Is anyone willing to take three of my family members!?!?!? LOL I am more than willing to come over and help with their caretaking, We can provide the coop and necessary supplies, I just need somewhere to put them!
Okay, so I didn't mean to write an entire book here !! Sorry!! Looking forward to many conversations with yall !

What general area are you going to be moving to? Does the coop have a run with it? If it does, we've got plenty of land for you to set up for a short time. If it doesn't the coop could go out in our back garage where they would be safe to get out of the coop. We're in Strasburg, about 45 minutes East of downtown Denver, about 30 minutes east of Tower Rd and i70.
