thx! Maybe I need to start setting traps....how big are a coyotes ptint?
3-4 inches on average, They can get bigger, or be smaller depending on age, gender, health, etc,. but that's about the norm for our region.

That being said, we saw some coyotes that would have had huge tracks. Very large. This was about a month ago a couple hundred yards from the house.

I was born and raised in Michigan where its cold and snowy 6+ months a year...we grow up driving on snow and ice and while I still hate the cold I actually find it fun to slide around a little as long as we are safe. I have been here almost 2 years and I'm sometimes Amazed how ppl who have grown up here don't know how to drive in the snow lol...where we are if you get more than 8 inches your 'snowed in' and roads close. Lol.
Hope you enjoy your new puppy! What breed?

We don't get as much snow as the media and movies make it out to be, so we still have issues with it in the Denver metro area. I've been driving here since i got my license in 98, and i can count on one hand the amount of times I've needed to drive in serious snow. It might take two hands to count all the serious snow storms, there just haven't been as many as when i was a kid. Out here on i70, they'll close the road for an inch of snow, because it gets dangerous with the wind.

Some people never get used to it, Ashley, and my philosophy as I've gotten older is, if it isn't a life-critical trip and you are afraid to drive, you wait.  I grew up in Upstate NY where you have to drive in ice, snow, sleet, slush in varying stages of rigidity, you name it :)  If you are driving in less than ideal conditions, you go slowly, and leave ten times as much room for stopping as you think you need.  Yes, other drivers will become impatient, and sometimes create a hazard by passing you, but you can't let them push you into driving faster than you think is safe.

Have good tires and front wheel drive, and if you have 4 wheel drive don't make the mistake of believing it means you have 4 wheel stop.  It's good for getting unstuck, but doesn't help you stop any faster.

My 2 minute lecture on winter driving :)  We want you here and safe.

ditto!

I also recommend finding a really large parking lot without a lot of poles preferably before they plow and go force your car into losing traction. To start, just get used to starting and stopping. Then when you feel ok, slam on the brakes after you get going, to see what happens and to figure out how to correct. My dad would do a quick pull of the emergency brake on me to get it to happen when he took me out to do this as a teenager.

thank you! Great info! I know we have lots of coyote activity but there are also some fox dens on our propery one thing I love about snow! Tracking sooo much easier.

Hi
I know this is a bit off topic but I am wondering if anyone here breeds dachshunds or knows of a good breeder? I am looking for a smooth coated dachshund of any size ( mini, tweenie or standard) preferably black and tan or red. Thanks for any help.

I have loved my doxies but would think twice before getting a puppy ever, ever again. They are the most obstinate breed I have ever owned. Ole Roy is 12 now and still looks good. His mate died last year and is buried in with all my chickens I have lost. That said, once I got past the 2 year mark, he became almost the perfect dog unless my son was in his wheelchair. Then he'd growl and nip at anyone who went by him. Sounds cute but when Tally was 8, people would naturally want to talk to the cute little kid with the hot dog in the wheelchair. Can't tell you the number of times Ole Roy almost bit someone for getting too close. It was the only time he ever showed his teeth though. I'll stop reminiscing now.

I'll be lost when something happens to him.
This made off with at least 1 of our ducks who didn't want to go back in their house over night...there are no signs of the other 3 (maybe they have a good hiding spot I don't know about). I am thinking fox...input? Its about twice as big as a house cat.

Uh oh....hopefully no loss last night?

That's so funny. My brother teaches people the same way. He pulls that emergency brake and forces them into a spin.

Made some traditional ginger ale with cranberries two days ago. Strained it today and threw the cranberries/ginger out for the girls. They took one peck of the ginger and spit it out. They are not fans of ginger. :)

Still say, once you guys try kefir soda, you'll never, ever, ever, ever go back to the store bought crap again. It's full of probiotics, little sugar and lots of bubbles. :)

Wanted to drop in and say Merry Christmas a bit late. My deployed son in the Navy popped in on the 23rd so We've been non stop GO GO GO ever since! I'm exhasted and furious with my step son. On Christmas Eve, he got tore up drunk (he's 21, all of a week too), and would NOT leave my chickens alone! He kept taking them out of the coop and holding them by the feet. I never hold my girls like that, they are more like pets. The worst part was it was snowing, my girls have their wing feathers trimmed because we live directly in the city they don't need to fly (and I encourage them NOT to hop the fence) so they can't fly. HE THREW ONE UP ON THE ROOF! I was livid! It was snowing, cold and who is gonna go up there and rescue her? Well, he climbed up, and almost slid off, but I came unstitched and really ******. She is fine, but he kicked her off the roof (not hard enough to hurt her but hard enough to send her sliding down the roof) and the other step son (equally as drunk, just not as obnoxious) caught her. Surprise, we have had NO eggs from the traumatized girl. The Colonel. I'm still fuming mad and am thinking of putting a lock on the coop door next time they come over. It's just not right.

Anyway, hope everyone's holiday was without incident and happy!

Wow. I've cut ties with family for less than that. I know it's a child so not as easy but respect me, respect the things I hold dear. That includes my slobbering dogs and my chickens. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Hopefully your gals will feel better shortly and give you a belated Christmas egg. :)
