I received a reply today from the breeder here in CO

He hopes to begin setting eggs February 1, so will have chicks late February and onward. He says right now his girls are not laying all that well, but the days have begun to lengthen so I'm hopeful they will begin to pick up shortly, as he is, I'm sure. Chicks are $8, eggs are $2.50. No minimum if picking up at his farm, which is in Berthoud, shipping minimum for chicks is 12.

I have to confess, as I researched I became more enamored of them, and will probably be buying eggs from him to test my new incubator - wound up buying the same one as Chick In The Burbs, should arrive any day now

I like getting chicks and eggs early, so I will probably make the trek to his place 2nd or 3rd week in February if he will have eggs for sale at that time, later if not, and if anyone here wants eggs or chicks I will be happy to pick up for you if the timing coincides. If you prefer later in the year, my transportation will depend on whether I have to wait to get eggs. Berthoud is about 40 miles North of Denver. Needless to say, you can combine an order yourselves and arrange pickup or shipping. His BYC profile name is Greathorse if you want to contact him directly.

Hi I'm new to the site and chickens. I'm Kellie I live in Fort Lupton Colorado. I haven't gotten any chicks yet. I've done quite a bit of reading. I'm hoping to purchase some chicks within the next few weeks, if I can find a place to purchase them that you don't have to wait for months. Maybe some of you from Co know. So I got a coop on Craigslist for free. It had to be taken apart to transport it. My step dad is going to help me put it back together. I think we can manage that part, he builds houses. I have to keep this all as cheep as possible. I don't know how many birds my coop will house. I thought maybe some of you could take a guess. I'm going to post some of the original pictures before we took it apart and moved it. I'm hoping it will house 9. Thank you in advance.

Kellie, as far as getting chicks early, it can be tricky - I placed my order with McMurray some time ago, and then had it moved to a week later when I added to the order later. I will be getting day old chicks the first week in February, I am buying to resell them as started pullets but will sell them as "day old" chicks if they are picked up the first week I have them for $4 each. I am pretty far from you though, I am located just south of the city of Pueblo.

I ordered all pullets except (confession) I added Black Silkies to the order, because I want to start a broody flock. The pullets will be a mix, including Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, White Leghorns, Araucanas, a few Blue Andalusians and Speckled Sussex and the Silkies. I will have a second order arriving a few weeks later, with some different breeds - Black Australorps, more Speckled Sussex, a few Buttercups and Delawares, New Hampshires, and more Black Silkies. All of these are hatchery chicks, which I've always thought were perfectly acceptable for the average backyard laying flock. Hatchery chicks will not usually do well at shows, but unless you want to show or are interested in breeding toward the Standard of Perfection (SOP), there is no reason to avoid them. In my opinion, anyway. Since you want a laying flock, you will do fine with hatchery chicks, and they sometimes lay earlier than their SOP sisters. Not always - I have 5 Speckled Sussex hens who didn't lay any earlier than those of higher pedigree.

Of these breeds I am ordering, all should do fine in our climate, I've had most of them myself in the past except the Buttercups and Delawares, but those should be fine here as well. I don't intend to buy or sell chicks that will be difficult to keep here.

Wendell (wsmith) has offered to bring you some chicks; he has Dominiques, they can be sexed at hatch, and his will be excellent. The father will be the bird you see in his avatar. I would recommend you accept his offer and buy a few chicks from him. If his visit to your area coincides with availability of chicks I have or, Coloradogal or Chick In The Burbs have, we can probably arrange to drop off chicks to him the morning he is coming your way if he doesn't mind transporting along with his. I shouldn't offer his services without his okay, but he's a pretty accommodating sort

Throughout the year various chicks, started pullets, juveniles, and adults will be available, many among your fellow Coloradans, and many of us are working toward being able to supply the in-state buyers with in-state producers. We will also be here to answer and ask questions, cheer you on, sympathize with you, and congratulate you on your first egg We're just that way.

When would you have some day oldish chicks available? How far are you? What are your prices?

I should have some mid-late March. $4.00 for pullets, $2.50 cockerels. I am south of colorado springs, but I will be at Ft Lupton in either April or May. I will have several hatches through June.

So you don't really want day olds then, you want started pullets when they are old enough to know they are pullets? If you want just a few pullets I can wait until my hatched eggs are old enough to tell what they are and sell you a few started pullets. Since I've never raised RIR I can't say for sure what age that would be, but hopefully by around 12 weeks or so, would that work for you? If not I can always add to a McMurray order, pullets only. Depends on whether you prefer CO bred and raised, and bred to SOP, I guess - either works. Some day a couple or so years from now, among us we should be able to provide many breeds and mixes without ever needing to order from a hatchery again. Yay!

LOL All is good. as soon as I find out what the dates of the Heritage Fair are, we can make any needed arrangements if that's what you would like to do.

I really did not want to do mess with having a brooder this year, but guess I will with the RIR. So i would be interested in three SS pullets if you have any extra in your second order.

WOW you are all so helpful!! I think that would work for me. I would like to buy some of your as "day old chicks" I really want my kids to get to experience raising them as chicks! We're so excited. This is a whole new chapter for us. I'm looking to get 8 or 9 so I'm thinking I'll take wsmith Wendell up on his offer and keep a couple spots open to get 1 or 2 from him when he comes up for the heritage fair in Fort Lupton. Do you think a big Rubbermaid container will be sufficient to use as a brooder? If I go that route ( because I have one in my garage) ill make a top for it. I'm sure I'm going to have a million questions so thanks for all the help.

WOW you are all so helpful!! I think that would work for me. I would like to buy some of your as "day old chicks" I really want my kids to get to experience raising them as chicks! We're so excited. This is a whole new chapter for us.
