Brought my son to physical therapy yesterday and we spent most of the time talking chicken stuff and telling chicken stories. A older man was listening and he asked if he could have some of my baby chicks. How could I say no when he told me about having them when he was a young man and how he wants babies so he could hand raise them. So I really hope that in this next batch, there will be a couple perfect babies for him to take care of. He may need some help getting a coop area together as he only has one arm and limps a bit but I also told him I'd help do that. I believe in the power of the chicken. Only another chicken person could understand exactly what I'm saying. He knows that 2 chickens isn't enough so suspect this man will be the 6th flock I've help set up in the Springs area for people.

Hi Newbies! I know, very androgynous, but it is hard to keep up and you lose your typing when you try to double check a back page. We should ask to add Fulenwider Farms to the coloradochickens web site. Didn't even know they existed! I want to try quail because I heard that they are more efficient in converting feed into meat and eggs. If I get more usable product from my dollar, I am willing to give it a try. I also would like some Silver Fox rabbits.
Eggs, I have more orders for eggs than I can fill now. I have already warned my customers that they might go up to 4.00/doz, depending on the swings in feed costs . I could sell 8 to 10 dozen a week now and not all of my regulars are on line for eggs yet because the girls took a holiday. (Which is fair, not bad-mouthing the ladies!)
So, my hubby looks at me this am and says, "So when are we getting quail? I know how you are. You mention an animal and then everyone forgets about it except you and then one day, bam, there will be 150 quail in the house! " He was actually laughing when he said this! I think after almost 30 years of marriage, he's got me figured out! LOL!

I didn't know they were there either, I can certainly drop them an email this weekend and offer them a page. I am concerned that they have "Road" Island Reds, but hey, when you grow up the daughter of an English teacher that sort of thing just jumps out at you, I guess I can edit anything they send me for spelling.

No, I wish it was. Its in a huge pile. Take the Fontanero exit west, then turn south and go about 500 yards. Its on the west side of the road.

I keep a flat nose shovel in the Durango, along with some of the big heavy duty 3 mil bags. When I have to go up that way to drop off a water sample at the El Paso County health lab (don't touch anything while there...) I stop off and fill up a bag or two, or three, etc. You never know how much there is or what quality. This last bunch I got were failry small chips, so good for walkways and general ground cover. The chickens love to dig through a pile of it that I have laced with scratch grains. Keeps them busy for days.

when integrating new chicks into a flock i know that its a good idea to keep them separated for awhile. I was thinking of just making a simple cage with some 2x4 or leftover decking and using poultry netting. I don't need anything heavy duty but is poultry netting enough to keep the adult chickens from trying to break in and get to the new chicks? They'll only be in there for yard time
