As i sit here crying, i have to ask what is the best, most humane way to cull a chicken. As I mentioned a three/four weeks ago, we had a chicken who was hobbling. Took her to the vet they didn't know what to do, gave us antibiotics, no help. She stands occasionally and hobbles a little but we can't keep her indoors forever and she is getting no better. If someone would like her to try and make her better or would put her out of her misery, or tell me what I am supposed to do....

I am sorry to hear that :(. I have never had to cull one but I hear there is a method where you put them to sleep with a soda stream soda maker and they don't feel anything and just fall asleep and pass on. Maybe someone here has more info on this?

Yes, Coloradogal posted instructions, links, and a video I believe. You can also use baking soda and vinegar. The trick was to start low dose enough that they just fall asleep, then increase concentration for euthanization. You need a container that can be made airtight with a port for the hose that has the CO2. I'll see if I can find her post. It was very helpful.

This is one of the situations that all chicken keepers have to face. Personally, i am not up to speed on some of the current humane dispatching methods. I am sure that there are some who are close to where you ar that would take her and properly and quickly take care of the situation for you.

Is there any way that you can give her her own little area in the coop? I had a chicken with a hip/leg issue that I kept in the house for a few days because she couldn't move at all and then when she could at least hobble, she got her space in the coop for a month at least and then at night while she got back into the flock. She always had a pretty good hitch in her giddy-up after that until the day she passed a year or so later.
