Colorado

So I have a plan... I am going to keep my 3 little ones and add them to the 8 chicks I ordered from Elizabeth country corner. I pick them up on Friday. I figure I don't know if any of the 3 are Roos, I also dont know if I might get a roo from the 8 I am getting.. They say 1 in 10 are the odds.. So the plan is to weed out Roos and see what's left, then thin down the remaining hens to 7-8... I kind of hope I have some Roos as I think it will be impossible for me to "thin down" the remaining hens..

If you could only have 7-8 out of the following what would you keep:

3 EE
1 OE
1 black copper marans
2 cuckoo marans
2 Welsummer
2 gold star

Had to share this pic of my hubby

I am zoned the same as you . And technically I am in security as well. Howdy neighbor

HOWDY!! I am just south of Drennan, off Bradley Road.....I'm a native of the Springs but lived in this area for 7 years. I just now figured out the division between Security, Widefield and Fountain.......glad to read your chicks started drinking on their own!!

I'm also zoned same as you guys (RS-5000). I'm further north in the springs, but I'm technically about 4 houses outside the city limit and HOA.

Good for you!! HOA's are a PIA....lol

Sounds like there are quite a few of us in the Colorado Springs area!!

It was a long time coming. We actually moved here so we could keep my littlest girl in the school she was in before. She is a special needs child and because of funding for the school districts we were told we either needed to move into district or go to a school in our district, which was district 3, widefield. It is quite a long story but as it all turned out we spent a lot of money to move and keep here in the shcool she was in to begin with. Its amazing what you do for your children. The cool property along the creek is just a bonus. I guess I would never gotten into chickens as much as I have without all this happening. Strange how things work out. She gets to stay in her school where she can get the help she needs and I get some land to hunt and raise chickens on.

I have a special needs child as well (she's 24 now) and she graduated from Widefield Dist. 3; I can only vouch for the high school....I liked everything EXCEPT they provided no discounted lunch program in Widefield High School; other than that it was great. Her school bus driver was very nice and her teacher was nice and attentive to my daughter's needs. He said I could come and visit at any time, several times a day if I wanted.....I knew she was in good hands. Peace of mind is a treasure, isn't it?

8 of 10 have hatched thus far. I am halfway into day 22. Of the 8 that have hatched, only 1 so far had an issue with yolk. The yolk issue chick is now indistinguishable from the rest save one little hernia left to absorb. 2 more have a little bit of a hernia, which usually goes away after a day.

Of the 2 left... 1 didn't make it. The eggtopsy did show it was fully developed but wrong position to hatch. The other still had some life so poked a hole to give it enough oxygen, remove a little shell and put it back in the incubator after misting the shell the water.

I am keeping the 2 with the hernias in the incubator overnight with the one struggling to hatch. I'm hoping that the quiet without the jumble of the more boisterous chicks will give them all time enough to rest.

Below are the pics: The little one is one of the phoenix chicks. The black/white ones are the marans mixes. I have 3 of the little phoenix chicks. So far, 5 of the maran mixes. If the maran mixes hold true to what I've been seeing, they should have the typical barred pattern but it will be more like the barring seen in a dominique, rather than a barred rock. They will also have a single comb, unlike the rose comb in the dominique. The feathers will be fluffy but not to the extent of the silkie. I have no idea yet on the color of the eggs. I would say a darker brown or pink egg, depending on the bloom.

The phoenix will lay the characteristic pale or creme white egg. Out of the shell you can already tell the size difference. =) They look so much smaller. The marans crosses look like marans at this stage.

how is the snow treating everyone? i went to denver for my knitting night and to swap kids with the hubby. it ended up taking him2 hours to get home, and i'm spending the night at my parents house because they closed the highway.
