Is the dark background color mahogany/red or black? Pink legs? Looks like pretty dark background for a SS, but it is hard to tell in photographs.

Then I agree she is probably a Mottled Java. I just found pictures of Auburn Javas on the Java Club of AMerica page - OMG ... swoon-worthy. Didn't even know they existed. I had gone there because I couldn't remember what color legs the Mottled Javas are supposed to have. Bob Blosl, who started the Heritage Rhode Island Red and Heritage Large Fowl threads, recently got a small, older breeding group of MJ from the son of a breeder who had them for a very long time, he thought they were quite jumpy/hyper compared to his RIR, but is going forward with re-establishing the line. They are old enough that this year he simply plans to hatch as many eggs as he can, to develop breeding stock while he can, and then next year and probably the year after will share chicks with those interested in helping this rare breed. Numbers are low right now but I would say if you can locate a roo and maybe another hen or two, you could set up a breeding pen - even if she is too mottled, she can produce chicks that may have less mottling that you could go forward with.
Quote: Well, I just posted her on the Java page too, will see what they come up with. I am fairly certain she is a MJ. I found a man in Kentucky or Tenn that breeds SOP Mottled Javas, he also sells hatching eggs, but would much rather have a few chicks to start with. I know she is not SQ, I think her tail is all wrong, but that is ok, as she set me on the path of Javas!
Yep, I agree the Auburn Javas are beautiful, interesting story of how they came about, as they were extinct, but some breeders started to have a few of these odd colored chicks, and they found out that they were indeed Auburn Javas, so several farms have started breeding them in hopes of getting their numbers up. They used to be lots of Javas here in the US, but then they fell out of favor, so they died out. I think they were used to start the RIR, but I could be wrong, they were used to start several breeds here in the US. I would be interested in some from Duane Urch, I guess let me know if, and when you might be ordering again. Will head over to the Heritage RIR site to read up on what Bob Blosl is doing.... Thanks for the info! .

Mottled Java, I got one that was mistaken for a Speckled Sussex. When I got her home I noticed she was not brown at all, very black with white spots. They are really good birds. Mine is about 8 months and lays very consistently and is so easy going.Well, I just posted her on the Java page too, will see what they come up with. I am fairly certain she is a MJ.
