Ya, I know what curiosity does for cats. Normally nature should take it's course but Chrissy should have motherhood bred out of her by now (she came from Big R). I will however be checking on the coop every 30 minutes and try to catch her out of the box to see what's in there.

For six week olds, I think that roost may be a bit high, hard to say from the pic.  We usually leave the feeder and waterer inside the coop, but they're free to come and go so they have access to it at all times.  I think when it gets hotter it might be more important to have more water sources available.  I've always read that nesting boxes should generally be lower than roosts.  We've been using five gallon buckets with part of the lid cut out laid on their sides on the ground, chooks seem to like it fine.
Awesome! We're hoping to have some broodies at some point.

Ok I may add a lower roost. I went ahead and moved them from the garage outside to the coop. Do you think it's ok?

Quick update for things here:

The puppies are now 6 weeks old and doing a great job keeping their sleeping area clean.

I have a new inner fence up so my doggy door is now in use again. My dogs are loving me again and now I don't have the fear of them getting out of my outer gate.

Speaking of chicks: The egyptian fayoumis and the phoenix/silkies are in the coop now with a heat lamp. They are soooooo much happier out there. I listened to them go to sleep last night and it was a contented trill and not the constant chirp being inside. So far, I do agree that they need less coddling than others. Beakers is outside with them as she had become their surrogate mother hen.

I think I mentioned that I placed 18 eggs for hatch in my incubator with a few silkie eggs. I honestly did not expect a huge hatch rate as I've never seen the silkies or the colloncas get any action ever. Of the 18 placed, 17 hatched. I have cute little silkie chicks now and some pretty muffed easter eggers. =)

I have sold 6 more laying hens in the last week. So my net total is still a little more than I'd like but not bad as we are going into summer and I usually always lose some due to the heat and their stupid choices.

Reminder again: If you wanted the 20% laying feed/Agland for 14.25, please PM me. It came in. I lost my list of people who wanted it.

Wow, so much good news packed into one post! Hurray for all of it! How exciting about the hatch! Any idea what color the Silkie chicks are yet? They can be hard to tell but you know what colors the parents are, so maybe you already know. Neato!

Yes, they will be fine and probably much happier. FWIW, I like to keep my roosts fairly low, and the nest boxes on the floor of the coop, so the roosts are usually only about 12-15" off the floor and just above the nest boxes to try and avoid any injuries to older or heavier birds jumping off the roosts. As youngsters they can get a fair amount of altitude, but as they mature and their bodies get heavier the lift gets harder for them.

x2 - don't want to interrupt the hatch. At some point soon, you will see the shells outside Mama, usually behind her, and then little heads peering out from underneath her :)
He he. I'll be out there for as long as one can possibly stay awake watching for little heads peering out

but she'll be nice and warm all night. The feeder is already loaded with starter and her coop is spotless. Do you recommend ACV in the water?

Got some new baby chicks on Sunday from Murdoch's in Longmont, six bantam auracanas. All are healthy and strong, hopefully I'll have some green eggs by the end of the summer!

Yes, 1 tablespoon per gallon, right from the start.
