There would have to be a minimum number of birds/ animals for on the farm but I bet if the truck was at these various swaps, it would be busy.

Denver Urban Homesteading used to take birds and process them for $20 a bird. They quit doing it. It was on their website, it has been removed now. These people in Berthoud process chickens.http://longshadowfarm.com/
I just called them. We have a process date on May 19th. I work at a farm and we have about 85 birds we need to process over the next month or so. I think $4 a bird is cheap. I last year we (the farm I work at) processed birds at a USDA facility in Northern Colorado. We paid $300 for the facility for the day. They aren't doing birds any longer there. Only eggs.

We had a processer up hear in NW colo. but he had to quite since he raises his own 'organic' birds and even though he is willing to process other birds, his USDA status would not allow another bird into his facility besides his own. I think a mobile processing is a great idea. My intentions were not to help out Murdocks but to try and help the birds. I know that bulk feed would be a great idea and we are lucky we have an elevator that makes laying pellet and scratch . We also grown our own wheat. I just wanted to help the birds. I think after todays fiasco, Murdocks has learned a valuable lesson. Count your chicken before the next shipment. Hopefully, they will find homes.

I'm certain that DUH was the source that I saw for processing. It was $20 a bird. Which is a whole lot.
I'll bet you could easily charge $6 a bird, though.

I shot them an email just to see if they can provide insight into why they don't process chickens any longer.

We go I-25 south to 6th Ave. East to Kalamath and take a right. The swap is on the left side on a corner a couple blocks down. You'll see people people walking around. But parking is very limited.

Once again, I will reiterate the fact that I will never move back to that hell hole! The house that I bought in HR was the second biggest mistake of my life. I had the worst neighbors I have ever had to deal with. It all started with my company truck. It was a brand new 2008 Ford F250 diesel. I backed it into the driveway every night after work. Within the first week I had complaints taped to my door and mailed to me. Trucks with company logos need to be completely concealed within the garage or not brought home from work. Well, that's a catch 22 considering they don't build a **** garage big enough for anything other than a small car. This went on to the point of fines, lawyers, liens, and legal fees. Finally, I decided to purchase large white magnets to cover my company logo. But the covenant enforcement department didn't stop! Next, it was a beautiful fall morning, I rolled the trash cans out and headed to work. At work I was called to an emergency at a project in KS. I took my overnight bag and started driving east. I returned to HR after two days to find notes taped to my trash cans and front door. I had been fined by the HOA for not removing my trashcans from the curb within 24 hours of my designated trash day. In the two years that I lived there I also dealt with grass being taller than the designated "specs", snow on the sidewalk, weeds in the rocks, a company trailer out front for more than 24 hours, and the house needing painted (It was a 5 year old house that was supposedly due for it's 7 year painting). I know most of you are probably thinking "geez, I'm glad I don't live next to this guy". But I'm telling you, I am not a bad neighbor. The infractions were written with the grass being 1/2 inch too tall, snow not being removed minutes after it stopped, and other ridiculous assessments. I absolutely hate HR with a burning desire

Sorry, I didn't mean to bring up bad memories! But I hear you with the stuff here and each neighborhood has their self-designate busy body (aka troublemaker) or many of them. We also have received a few letters over insignificant and unbelievably stupid things over the years as have most people I have talk to. I have found neighbors come and go and so do the intensity of the problems. With that said, I have wanted to move out of here for a long time but kids kind of keep you in one place. We will make sure there are no HOAs when we finally move.

I just wanted to make sure that the anyone considering HR is aware that there is more than meets the eye to just believing you can have 4 chickens and no roosters. Besides the HOA, neighbors play a big role here, in my opinion.

There are 7 acres here and according to HOA I can't have chickens either. Horses are OK - as long as it's not considered livestock. The house at the very end of the road isn't in our subdivision. He has goats, pigs, 50 chickens, dogs, cats, etc. Nobody cares, as 90% of the people I know here have chickens. Some even have coops you can see from the road.
On another note, I just finished putting up the heat lamps, heated waterers, and all the associated wires. The same ones I took down for the summer last weekend

I'm changing my location to the twilight zone.

On HOAs, I rarely hear good things and avoided them when I was home hunting. Very glad I did now. No one complains about the neighbors motorcycles (those things are LOUD), the other neighbors regular parties that fill up half the street with cars or my birds (barring one individual who has moved).


I am looking at possibly selling either two of my older layers or my banty Cochin. Someone yanked all the feathers out of the back of the bantams head. My prime suspect is our head hen, a 3 year old EE. Second suspect is second from the bottom, the 2 year old Australorp. Problem is I can't be 100% that it is one of these two so removing them may not stop the problem. Eventually I want an all bantam flock but I was planning to let the older big girls expire from natural causes, not selling them or giving them away. But I am not sure I should keep my only bantam if the others are hurting her, especially since I can't be sure I got the aggressor rehomed :/

It's odd what areas fall under an HOA. I've never dealt with HOAs before moving to Colorado. It's harder than I imagined to find a place without them. Even our undeveloped 12 acres in Hartsel has an HOA. Not nearly as strict as where I live in Parker, though.
We've had some of the same issues with the Association and nosey neighbors. Warnings for "weeds" (grass growing in the cracks in the driveway), trash cans out front too long, Christmas lights up past the second week of January. I understand trying to maintain value in the area, but for Pete's sake, let people live in their homes!

3 - The chicks at Murdock's - as said above I will be in Denver Saturday, would anyone be willing to pick up and bring to me while I'm in Denver Saturday? I would like 25-50 of the oldest pullets they have if so. PM me if you would like to make arrangements. I can meet right after or at the swap. I plan to have lunch with my son while up there, he lives hear the Evans exit.
