Not crazy at all! Redness of comb and wattles are definite indicators of readiness to lay, even from one day to the next. I observe the same with my hens.
And it tells us something with Roosters as well. The redder the comb, the more sexually mature and active. .....Since we put Abe into the breeding pen, his comb and wattles have really reddend up, much more so than in the past few months.

Ok, who told my gals I was looking at changing the lineup?

I have had four eggs a day from four hens for the last three days and I already have three today! I was lucky if I got two in a day for last month!

My egg basket overfloweth! I am probably going to give away a dozen or two to a friend of mine down the street. They are a family of 6 and go through eggs like water.

Motivation is great, isn't it?!

We routinely give away eggs too.

I give away eggs to a family of nine, pretty much once a week. My six girls are averaging 33 eggs a week for the past 4 weeks. I can only imagine when my other 8 will start laying. We should be swimming in them.

Remember I said last week I filled my bator so I wouldn't buy any chicks...

Uhhh, so I just candled them all like just now. I put 51 in the bator last Tuesday and today 49 remained in the bator. Holy chicken! Only 2 did not show any signs of anything. All the rest you can see the little black pea with veins.

At the same time I had a hen go broody so I stuck 7, 3 week old eggs to hold over till I collected the eggs I wanted for her. Of course today I candled those 7 and guess what, yup, they too are showing signs of chickies. I'm really hoping I get another broody soon to give her the eggs I collected.

On another note my Delawares started laying and no crowing from the roosters but I did see one this morning attempt to mate.
