I'm one of the new people's around here. I'm Arin in real life

mother n new wifie to my SO of 6+yrs. We finally left Arizona behind and our family members + live music scene and friends for small town living. LOL - if you knew how much I love tank tops swim suits and even though I lived in AZ being barefooted most always..you'd think I was insane to move to where we are LOL because the thought of shoveling snow isn't ideal for me. Let alone the amount of freezing my body will feel like I am experiencing HA! But my dirty hippie new age self has always had this deep rooted feel that id be much happier and content AWAY from the CITY. Ive always lived/grew up in new to well developed nice suburban cities...Tempe AZ Ahwatukee (aka Phoenix) AZ Anaheim Hill CA Newport Beach CA
And I've always felt stuck to the grind of flashy fast paced lifestyles and cities....and would always find.myself wandering camp grounds music festivals anything that would draw me to the root of our earth...its nature of things.

So here we are...my husband (36) and I (34) off the grid...almost literally in a very small town...

Ofcourse, odd circumstances that happened when we left AZ with our major house items in storage and just our two vehicles loaded down with our Daughter (23months old) and 6 yo old Boxer dog....some how.....pulled us EAST way EAST of Co. Springs ...we totally thought we would be near a lake and a forest...HAHA but turns out we kinda LOVE this area...it.is rather beautiful and quiet ...ill take rain snow wind threats of potential tornados (smh oh my) than 103° at 930PM - as my Dad told me it was when they arrived back to Phoenix on Saturday this weekend from spending the 4th with us out here in Simla. They also delivered the rest of our house and belongings.from our storage.

Im kinda in love with the fact I can learn from you all about my chickens and thinks its pretty cool you all talk about and share your life's as well as your chickens! I'm just thrilled to share with you all a bit about US and how addicted I am about helping keep my flock of girls happy as they grow bigger. Thanks for accepting us newbies and Ive always longed to find a happy active positive board to chat on with people in my area and with common interests. So anyhow Ive been enjoying you all and posting/commenting. Ive got tons to learn still with raising chickens...but were excited.to have them and love them and care for them.

I previewed this...but as I normally am active on my Droid cell phone in the AMs while.my daughter sleeps...its hard to adjust my TYPOS...auto correct can kill ya too...for the most part it all makes sense with the random ((.)) period here n there. Ha

Welcome! The first year, maybe two you will be cold, but you do get use to it. I promise! I moved from Dallas during the summer myself(when I was 18), but I think Colorado was worth it every day. If you have trees around you I would not worry about tornado's too much. They break up the wind so not much gets in to those areas. If it is open then you might get some but the worst I have seen out that way was a F3 that damaged a barn. I am not as much an expert down there as up here so people down there can say better how the weather is.

I don't remember how I dealt with the heat, and I can't imagine this 120 degree hell you came from. I have to go to Vegas in a few weeks and I am dreading it, I don't gamble and rarely drink so I will spend it mostly in my hotel room.(I know I am odd) I am only venturing out to see KA and go to and from the airport.

On another note I just bought chicken pasture seed, and red clover for my girls to come home to.

Chicken pasture seed? What is it and where did you get it? I threw out some drought tolerant pasture seed and clover...I'm not sure if any of it came up. But, I've decided ill be doing it over and over till I get a heavier growth coming in.

Well I'm not a happy camper......

The good news is two of my girls have started to lay...the bad news is, someone in the flock of 6 is an egg eater

I don't know what to do about it, if there is anything I can do about it. I've looked to see who has "egg on their beak" but to no avail.

I'm hoping this is a phase and whoever is just needing more calcium. I have a couple of problems with the oyster shell, one is my younger girls can't have it yet because they're too young; the other problem is my big girls (that have started to lay) won't eat it.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Hello everyone. I recently found out that my silkie is a rooster. We're not allowed to have roosters in Denver. Does anyone have a silkie hen they would trade me? My 3 kids are heartbroken we all loved the silkie so much! I feel that if I traded or even bought another silkie hen it would lessen the blow. Can anyone help?

I hate people that yell 'DON'T DO THAT' at me. So, I'll just say, put your roosts back up. Your birds will figure out where to lay, and if you let them sleep in the nest boxes that may become a habit, and you will end up with poopy eggs all the time.

Yes they do throw a lot of the litter out. But then they throw EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. Their favorite pastime is rearranging whatever is on the ground/floor. Ya never know, there might be a treat hidden down there.

I appreciate the advice, however, a "poopy" egg can be cleaned, a broken egg is a waste of $$ and food, and I feel may encourage egg eating....I will put the roosts back up as I said, when the eggs are fairly consistently layed in the nesting boxes. My Blue Adalusion, Laverne, has been spot on laying in the nesting box since I took down the roosts; Patty, my Araucana, still hasn't quite gotten the idea of laying in the nest, her eggs are anywhere in the coop. This morning however, I don't know what happened, but someone ate her egg. Cuprit unknown.

We just got 9 gals on Saturday, and couldn't be more excited!! We are in Co Springs. I woke up today and had the best morning because I found that our Ameracaunas laid 2 eggs! First eggs in their new home! We have 3 Ameracaunas, and 6 Buff Orpingtons.

Chicken pasture seed? What is it and where did you get it? I threw out some drought tolerant pasture seed and clover...I'm not sure if any of it came up. But, I've decided ill be doing it over and over till I get a heavier growth coming in.

I got 5 lb of it and 2 of clover, if you want to meet up or want me to mail it to you $10 for a pound of pasture $6 for a pound of red clover? Just enough to re-coop my cost(equivalent of 1/5 my cost), all I wanted was a lb of each. Unless you want the full 5lb and then you can get it on Amazon, shipping is a bit pricey.

If I had run in to that I would have tried the mustard egg, I did some research a while back. There is a informational page on this site I think, if I find it again I will edit this post. However one method was to take an egg, hollow it out and refill it with mustard. Chickens hate the stuff, a few of those might solve the problem?? The problem with egg eaters is they have discovered that eggs are tasty so you have to try and correct that image if you can. Most sadly cull egg eaters because it is hard to break them of the habit. When I find the link I will post it, good luck.

I have 2 ducks that we rescued from the humane society here in CS. We were hoping that at least one of them turned out to be a female but it looks like they are both male. (The whole point was to have eggs) We are now looking at getting a sexed pair of females next spring however we can't keep the males too. Are there any duck mommies out there who would like this pair of males? They are bonded and will need to go and stay together. They have never seen another duck but they love our 2 Labradors. Super friendly and will even play with my 2 year old. One is a Peking and one looks just like him but with a poof on his head. Hence the names Ping and Poof. (At least we think they are both male)
