So I noticed in my rundown I forgot to mention the Speckled Sussex juveniles. I have the adult hens from the hatchery I had last year, then 2 pullets and 3 cockerels left of the chicks I got from Tony Albritton this spring. As with the RIR, I want to keep a main and a backup male, and it will be a while before I have it narrowed down, these are big and slow maturing birds. The 7 are all together and seem to be doing fine so far. Pretty pretty. One of these days I have to make time to get the camera out there and snap some pictures.

I am in Kiowa and we have been adding to our flock over the summer, we have 13 hens, a rooster, and a turkey. My chickens provide endless entertainment for us - I love it!

The cockerel we call "Wonky" may not be doing well. He isn't growing correctly....Same issue to a lesser degree that we observed in the small pullet last year. Very odd. It seems his spine isn't growing, and one side isn't developed as much as the other. It's becoming more difficult for him to get around. I may have to put him down tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for the congratulations and for all of the great advice regarding patience! It was worth the wait. I'm pretty sure my egg came from my larger EE. Hopefully her sisters will catch on soon.

Pozees, You have so much going on, I'm not sure how you keep track. Good luck with the babies. Maybe the loud Fayoumi will just be a bossy pullet

Sorry to hear this Wendell, it seems you've had a challenging chicken year.

Ya, some years are like that. We had concerns with this one from the beginning, kept hoping he would grow out of it. The thing is this.... Those that survive will be stronger. Their offspring should also be survivors. That's one of the things we are going for.

Happy late birthday to Beth I am glad that it went so well. I am sorry about your chicks, I hope next year you get a stronger batch, putting down little ones can't be easy.

Things have been crazy around here, trying to get ready for two house warming parties(can't have friends mingling with family ), some family obligations, and trying getting everything ready for the girls to come home, I miss them so much. How are my girls holding up, still not eating grass?

They finally started eating the grass and greenery that came up. Picking up a little in laying. Still being chickens....

This guy is one that hatched in May. He is about 13 weeks old. All the others from this group are doing very well.
