I actually had a couple of hours yesterday afternoon to do some poultry associated work! The tumbleweeds had started to cause access issues, so I was able to burn a bunch of them and have unrestricted access to my chickens.... Then I opened the side gate and raked out the ones from my "management area" Along the West fence they had been 5 feet deep and I couldn't get into my feed shed. Those are all gone now. Started cleanup in pens 3-6. Topped off the feeder and waterers in the main hen house and chicken yard, which is where all of the chickens and turkeys are now.
A friend gave me an old steel desk in great shape, so I moved some things around in my feed storage shed and now it is a feed storage shed / chicken office without electricity...... LOL

That thing was HEAVY!:th

Saturday and Monday I will get the main hen house cleaned out and new bedding put in for the winter.

Judi,
Did you notice that the Heritage Large Fowl thread has been moved to "Staff Discussion" ? The thread has strayed from its original intent I think since Bob died.....

I had read that happened, and have been in Denver training again so just had a chance to check back today and saw it is back up and running. Some mods/admins thought it had strayed off topic and wanted to regroup I guess. Personally, I would rather seek guidance there for many husbandry issues than the threads mentioned, but it isn't my thread, so whatever they decide is the way it will be. There have been a few discussions that may not have related directly to Heritage Large Fowl, but it didn't really bother me; then again, although I thoroughly enjoy that thread along with several others, my life is busy and I have other things requiring my worrying that come way ahead of whether a thread is staying on topic :) I agree it should be maintained in Bob Blosl's intent and tradition, but honestly I thought he was very tolerant of discussions so long as they related in some way to good husbandry of heritage large fowl. Kind of a "whatever" moment for me I guess :)

Nice! I just added some extra shavings to a pen tonight - supposed to be in the teens overnight. I hate winter. I know I shouldn't say that, all the trees and grasses need it, but man, I hate being cold! I think the chickens are not big fans either LOL.

Anyone interested in a pair of 3 yr old birchen Modern games? They are rescues from a neglect situation. Ive had them for ~2 weeks, and have fixed them up from some health conditions. They are totally healthy now, and ready to go to a really good home. I really want to see them go to someone who's going to give them a wonderful home. Please let me know - I live in the city (Fort Collins) and can't keep the roo anymore. He started crowing when he started feeling better haha.

Here's a picture of him in a epsom salt bath! :)

He looks like a cute little guy, BlueJaye! Hopefully he will soon have a home nearby.

Mtn Margie, I know, I know, I am just a big baby LOL.

So I was pleasantly surprised this afternoon. I went out and was tending the chickens, when I saw #11, the new pullet, go into a nest box and sit for a while. Very happy about this as she is only 20 weeks old and getting ready to lay.
:weee

Lucky you! My Cream Legbars are over 24 weeks, hanging out in the nest boxes for almost two weeks now, and I don't have one blue egg yet. They're making me crazy! I feel like a brand new chicken owner, checking every two hours for first eggs.
Guess it's not the worst trade off...100% sexing and pretty blue eggs. Still sigh every time I go out there.

So, as some of you may have experienced... 2-3 inches of snow! I have baby chicks I am getting today or tomorrow and I've got the brooder set up, are there any things I need to do for the chicks since it's officially winter? They will be silkies and sizzles!
