i am blown away , and alittle bit in disbelief, as all the 4h animals that are sold at the elpaso county fair in calhan go to simla foods to be butchered, not granted simla is elbert county i wonder how this is possible?

i may have found out why!

it seems there is a bit of a loupole in the law on this.

By the whole animal or portion (halves or quarters) of the animal: If you are processing an animal for consumption by the owner of the animal, this meat does not require USDA inspection – it is considered custom-exempt, meaning a processor that does not require continuous inspection because they only process meat for the owner of the animal. The meat or poultry cannot be sold and can only be consumed by the following:

  • The owner of the animal
  • The owner’s immediate family
  • Non-paying guests
Custom processed meat and poultry must be labeled with “NOT FOR SALE.”

so basically you can LEGALLY offer the service of butchering to the public, as long as you don't charge for the meat. You CAN sell the service of butchering.

so simla foods basically does this. they sell the SERVICE of butchering to the public and charge by the pound. but they are selling the service to the owner of the animal for the owners consumption of the animal.

SO if you raise a animal and have them butcher it , you can NOT legally sell that meat to anyone. you can only consume it. and they can NOT sell meat they butchered in their grocery store which make sence if you have ever been in their grocery store..

i would have NEVER guessed this was possible.

They are very good butchers by the way , i have used them on occasion and have never had a complaint. they are fast, courteous and do a very professional job.

Scott, if I am able to obtain a RIR cockerel from Paul in Berthoud, I plan to set up my pullets with him. Other than that I will have only Silkie and Egyptian Fayoumi eggs, and probably some crosses (have a Partridge Rock cockerel in with a PR hen and mySLW, SS, and RIRs right now). I would say I'll have Partridge Rocks but so far I do not consider them heritage quality birds.

Anyone have any interest in ordering ducks next year? I was thinking about adding some runners to my flock. I can order an assortment of runners, (black, blue, chocolate). They will arrive day old. With shipping the 6 that I had in my shopping cart were going to be $70. Obviously if we order more it will be more economical. If no one wants to order I can just wait until Jax or Murdochs carries them.

Yesterday my little guinea pig of whom I took care of for 3 1/2 years got sick and passed away on my lap later that night.

I raised guinea pigs as a child and my daughter now has one. We love them so much.

Our animals, big and small, have a way of creeping into our hearts, and it hurts when we lose them. So sorry.

When are you planning on ordering them? We would be interested in more runners as well, but are evacuated due to flooding for the time being so our farmette is scattered all around CO. You can PM me if you'd like.

Anyone selling any silkie babies/pullets right now? I know it's not really the right time of year...

I am putting Silkie eggs into the hatcher tomorrow evening that, if they survived the temp issue I had with my incubator, are due to hatch this weekend. Hopefully I resolved in time to save at least some of them. If not, maybe the following weekend - I set every Saturday, and I also set eggs to hatch on New Year's Day, so if I have my temp problem fixed in my incubators I should have chicks every weekend. The ones due New Year's Day and the following Saturday were set in a new Brinsea which I bought because of its reputation for being a more reliable incubator. Had I known a year ago what I know now, I would have just saved a few more months and bought a Sportsman cabinet incubator to begin with. Saving for it now. I have hatched many chicks in the styrofoam incubators I have, but should have hatched many more.

We got 3 Cream Legbar eggs yesterday! Must have helped with the warm weather, and now of course it's going to get cold again.
The eggs are pretty small so far, especially compared to sex-link eggs.

Pozees~ Our little Silkie babies are 13 weeks, when do you think I can start really guessing sex? We've got three black ones, they're just so pretty, and then three blue. I think my husband said four are bearded, and they're all super fluffy.
