Colorado

K, Colorado Peeps! I'm off to mount Wolf Pee Packets strategically placed around the area I'd like the chickens to be safe in their free range.

At fox level.

These are the first days they've been allowed out, and they travel the melted areas and go so far that I get freaked out and go chum them back in with mealworms. The wind is nasty today, but they wanna be outside, so who am I to argue? They look so goldarned happy! Traveling from one Ponderosa copse to the next low-growing Juniper. They really like the trees/rocks next to the coop where we have an upside down horse trough which I guess provides a bit of a wind break.

Chickens and Wolf Pee. who'da thunk it?

I hope it works. Let us know how it goes. I let our girls out today while I worked on prepping my garden beds. The wind was awful last night and this morning but has died down now. They look so happy that I haven't put them back up even though I'm back in the house. It's nice enough to leave the slider open though so I have my ears on alert for any commotion out there. I don't want any more attacks!

wsmith great news on the candling! I am very excited to have your eggs in my incubator - some 3 weeks seem longer than others, don't they? LOL

I hear you....I'm a nervous wreck when they're out.

The neighbor, who has the big 27-bird flock up the hill, just opens the coop/run door and goes about her business...leaves and everything. She's never had any problems except the fox occas getting a bird midday or because her DH forgets to shut the door early enough, but that's only happened rarely. And she's next to Forest Service land, at least I have distant neighbors on all sides and Highway 36, tho' a 1/4 mi away as the crow flies, along one side. She's never had a single medical problem...'course, I told her it's because she never LOOKS!!!!!
But seriously, if they've had problems, they've cleared up on their own. So there you go.

Me? I'm either out there, looking out the window, I play talk radio that's aimed at the forest kinda loud (but not too loud...don't want to freak out the chickie), now I'm hanging wolf pee, and DH is building predator eyes to mount on the sides of the coop.

At this rate, me AND the chickies will make it to the old folks' home!

Me too!

Sweeny's said they expect to be grinding their starter and grower end of this week or next, which I am very happy about. I just used up the last bag of their starter, and two weeks ago finished the last bag of their grower, so have been improvising. I bought 24% protein Turkey and Game Bird Starter made by Ranch-Way, and a 12% Maintenance crumble also by R-W. Mix 2:1 (= 20%) for starter and 1:1 (=18%) for grower. So far all seem to like it okay. I am sure I could just feed the straight starter with no trouble, but right now all but a few chicks are 3-4 weeks of age, so good time to stay at 20%. I asked about a discount for purchasing a lot of bags at once, and it isn't significant enough to pay for a storage building even over a few years, so I'll continue to buy one or two bags at a time until later in the season when I know they will run out before they grind more, and try to make my best guess at how much more I will need before the end of next February. I'll be wrong, but hopefully at least close :)

Nope... It's been so windy our thoughts blew away.......

A discussion of this year's wind from a Q&A from our local NOAA neighborhood guy...... in case you need something to read on the floor.....

Karen S, you asked some questions which I will answer briefly
here:

why so often this year?
this is the first time since 1995-96
that we are having a really cold winter in the Midwest (and it's
really warm in CA) which means that there is is one of the
steepest temperature gradients across the country that you can
get which basically anchors the jet stream right over us, need I
say more?

Are there links to atmospheric pressure?
yes (high pressure to
our west/low pressure to our east increases the odds for wind
storms)

Usually wind means warmer weather is coming in, but puzzled why
it KEEPS blowing after warm weather is already here and no major
temperature change.

I disagree, perhaps this is true further down into the lower
foothills/plains, but up here that temperature/wind link is
weak. Whenever you get a warming
trend with wind, we tend to call it 'Chinook' around here, but
the opposite variety (wind with cooling) is called 'Bora', and,
yes, we often get that up here. The further down you go in
elevation, the more reliable the warming with wind gets as you
are compressing the air and warming it up, so, in Boulder most
of the windy days are warm (not all).

I would like to be more educated on this topic. Link perhaps or
website I can go to?
Your guess is as good as mine, I would
google it if you are really interested. I know one of the guys
that developed the so-called 'Brown-Weaver' wind typing system,
and there are at least five different ways in which you can get
wind storms around here, sometimes quite hard to predict because
they involve the existence of an inversion just high enough
above our continental divide to trap the flow underneath and
force it to go over our mountains rather than around it (wind is
a bit like a horse, it wants to go around an obstacle rather
than over it, if it can!).

Will this wind stop or get worse for March/April this year?
It
typically is worse down in the plains during spring, while
higher up (i.e., up here at Bar-K) the decreased vertical
stability of our air reduces the risk of an inversion over the
mountains/increases the risk of thunderstorms instead of
windstorms during spring.

Hope that answers most of your questions w/o boring everybody to
tears - Klaus
