Hi all,
I just bought a house in Delta. I'm doing all my reading now, hopefully in a few weeks I'll have 3-6 chickens.
...then in 6 months to a year you will have 10 or 12 chickens

..chicken math...it will get you.

and welcome to the CO thread! I hate to say it, but I've been doing all my reading here for MONTHS, and am STILL not done!

But such is life, there's always more to learn!

Anyway, welcome, and best of luck with your chickens when you get them!

Hi jumperpastlife! Welcome to the thread. Catchy name. In my brain I picture you as a past life jumper, a time-traveler like in the Highlander series.

But anyway, get/ build three times the size coop than you think you will need and you will be set for a year or two, seriously. "IT" happens!
Enjoy the beautiful day, y'all! I am off to ride the pony at Lory State Park because I worked on the garden stair project yesterday and a girl can only move so many rocks in one weekend!

LOL I had the exact same picture in my head :) Excellent advice, as always. Hope you have a great ride!

Hello all,
I joined BYC in March, and have spent an enormous amount of time reading various posts in many forums. I also spend hours looking at pictures to try to get an idea of how to sex my six 8-9 - week old chicks. One day I'm sure I have all cockerels, the next day I am convinced they're all lovely pullets. Even the one whose squawk two weeks ago knocked me for a loop. Then I read the post about the chick who crowed and then started laying eggs! So s/he was a girl until yesterday, when my lovely Buff Orpington, friendly, funny, and loving to hop up to my lap and shoulder, walked around crowing. Now I have to wonder about that post.....

Do any of you have any experience with hens that crow?

Since I live in Denver, I will have to give him/her up if the crowing continues without eggs. S/he was a guaranteed pullet, so I can get a replacement; but I don't want to get any more chicks at this time.

If I'm being totally unrealistic, would anyone be interested in this little guy at some point in the future? He's still too scrawny for eating, but I don't know how long I can keep him before my high-density-apartment-dwelling neighbors start to complain.

Your thoughts and comments will be much appreciated!

Welcome alebuela,
Maybe post a picture of the bird and let us know what breed it is.
I have hens who sort of 'crow'. Honestly, they are louder than my little bantam roosters. I have an almost 8 week old Delaware (I'm almost positive is a rooster) rooster who hasn't crowed yet.
So, I'll probably be looking for a home for him too. He would make a nice meal, so I might keep him if no one wants him.
Good luck and keep posting!
