My chicks are hatching from the eggs I got from Wendell.

I didn't think they would hatch until tomorrow.
I went to see how the broody was doing this morning and I could hear peeping and I looked under her and the eggs were peeping! I didn't know they did that. It is about the cutest thing I have ever heard. I went back to move water and food a little closer to the broody about 2 hours later and there were 4 little faces staring at me!
I set 9 eggs. I can't wait until tomorrow. Can I peek under her in the morning?

I live in Colorado Springs and love it! I have 15 hens, no roosters. I live just outside the city limits.

Okay two chickens are good with the new babies but one will try to attack every time she sees them. I am putting the little ones out in a cage to get use to outside and while I do I will take one hen at a time to the new area to let them graze side by side. two will graze and mostly ignore the little ones but one just walks around the cage and tries to peck them from the outside. Am I going to have a problem with this one, any suggestions?

Give them some time. When you first try them together you can give the chicks a place the hens can't get into, and throw down treats all already enjoy - we have had good luck with apples cut into very tiny bits, the chicks and everyone get them every afternoon. I just integrated 6 RIR pullets into my Big Girl flock (where the RIR cock bird lives also) - put them into the coop after all went to bed, next morning I scattered apple pieces and scratch on the ground. I had to remove the pullets from the coop, but there were about 3 pecks from one of the adult hens, and that was it. Smooth. Easiest integration I've ever had.

Oh how exciting! I would recommend waiting and counting little faces so you don't interrupt a hatch in progress - she should bring them off the nest when done, so probably sometime between tomorrow and Sunday. I'm so happy for you!

Hi all! I've been away for awhile and wow! it's easy to get behind reading here. (and my mini dachshund had her puppies! 2 girls, yay!)

I have a batch of roosters I'm letting go cheap. $5 each. They are all 3-5 months old. Pick up at my place or make arrangements if you want them transported by someone. I'm in Loveland, CO, just 1.7 miles west (then 1 mile north) off of exit 255. I'm ready to get the numbers down a bit.

Black Ameraucana - 2-3
Blue Ameraucana - 1 I think.
Wheaten Ameraucana - 1 from Lark Rise, 1 from Paul Smith
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte - 6-8
Silver Laced Wyandotte - 1-1 year old very fertile and 2 - 3 months olds.

I also have 3 straight run Muscovy ducklings from Country hatchery. All chocolates. $10 each.

yes it is umm we did look into the fortcollens one and they said basically that were dumb for getting a rooster and we tried to explan that it wasnt on purpus but the could understand how it wasnt on pourpus but thanks for the luck!!!!!

Anyone in Parker or near who wants babies, the Parker Feed store has about a dozen they can't find homes for. There are Production Red's, White Leyhorns, Golden Laced Wyandottes, about 2 weeks old.

Wow. Those must have gone fast! I was just down there today, and all they have are turkeys and Cornish.

So last week i separated my female quail from my males that i had hatched a few weeks ago. I had the males in a grow out cage in the garage and put the females in with my other females so they could integrate. I got home kinda late this evening from work and found that the grow out cage had been raided by something. The only thing left are feathers and wings. I am pretty sure it was a racoon and that it happened this evening just after dark, so now yhe war is on again for racoons. I got five last year in a 10 day period. We shall see this year. I have no use for these thieves. Let the games begin. My neighbor told me a couple days ago about spotting a bear also. This may be an interesting summer. Two mountain lions a bear. Two bobcats and a few racoons. I think i need to build a prison cell for my poor birds. Wish me luck.

Ugg samsr, what a drag. I don't know how I would deal with that situation.

I am pretty sure there are 6 chicks now. I can't see anything else, no eggs and no broken shells.

So sorry that happened. Racoons are the worst of the bunch for sure.

mo - long day waiting for the head count, huh? 6 is good, hope to hear there are even more when all is said and done.

Minchi - what we have found is, once they figure out at least once a day you are bringing them apple pieces, they are happier to see you. Bob is like the pied piper of chickenworld around here, he is the one giving them the apples most days I can't just walk to them and pick them up, except the Silkies, but they're usually interested in what I've brought them this time.
