Did you mention you had some Breese chicks a while ago, or am I thinking of someone else? I was wondering how they turned out, if you ate them or breed them?

I bought the 5 chicks that Judi hatched from a breeder in CA who was breeding Greenfire Farm stock. They're fabulous birds. Very mellow personalities, large and densely solid, obviously meat birds, but they are excellent foragers and and really get along great with my Buff Orpingtons. I'm actually getting out of my Buff Orpingtons to focus on them in my 2nd coop. Once they start laying this fall, I'll hatch as many as I can before it gets too cold to try and build my flock up. I have read that they're extremely productive layers as well. To me, they might be the ultimate dual purpose breed if they taste that good and are actually good layers. I plan on caponizing all my extra culled cockerels at 8 weeks and finishing them on milk soaked grain like the French. I'm dying to see what the hype is all about.

ah tis the season...my cat left a lovely young rat on the front porch as a gift. I did see it in time to stop the small dogs from going out & grabbing it. Mama Kitty still thinks of the small dogs (Lhasa's) as her babies & brings "food" for them from time to time...yuck!!
The toads can sure make a dog sick ..hope yours did not munch a bunch on the toad!!
Dogs running loose are one reason I keep even my ducks & geese up at night. My neighbors found out that Colorado is "fence out..not fence in"..due to open range laws. So he has no problem letting his dogs run loose to chase whatever they can.

What??!!! Maybe someone should inform him of the right to kill on sight any dogs seen chasing/harassing livestock or wild animals law. I don't think his dogs would last very long up here.....

He doesn't understand open range laws. Fence out only applies to livestock. If my cows break out and eat your stack of hay, that's your problem. Does not apply to domesticated pets. We are also the wild, wild west and can shoot to protect our livestock on our own property.

He just did one bite and killed it, he didn't like the taste so him actually eating it wasn't a problem, plus I had rushed in right away to try and stop it, but was too late!

E thanks for posting up those pics and info, I will be curious to see how that goes. I can see the logic behind having dual purpose birds.

Sadly this man does not care..his dogs were out chasing donkeys in the pasture next to us. I called as I was concerned about the dogs..donkeys will get 'em! When I called his son answered.
Said..Dad this lady wants to talk to you ..the dogs are out chasing the neighbors donkeys. The Dad hollered ...tell her to just shoot them! The kid got back to me & I said you do not have to repeat that I heard your Father. So tis a case of him not giving a dad gum about the dogs...& if you try to enlist help from him he will say shoot 'em. I do not want to..but I will. It is his responsibility to keep his dogs up & if he wants them shot...he can dern well shoot them himself. But if we do it ..to his kids we will be the bad guys..not him..he is a jerk.

I wish I were back on 70 acres with the nearest neighbor over a mile away instead of here on this 5 with folks on all sides ...at times!!

Maggie...got me interested in the Breese Chickens...now have to look up & reconsider my decisions on flock. They sound like a good all purpose chicken indeed.

Had my son over today helping me building coops. he had his 2 dogs with him. One of his dogs is a predator and neither of us noticed in time... It killed a baby bunny and chewed it up pretty bad. I wasn't very happy about it at all.   I told him I'm going to get a center point ground anchor and that dog will have to be on a chain from now on.  Can't have that kind of thing with my chickens here.

A wild rabbit, or raised rabbits?
If your chickens are fenced, I don't see why tying up the dog will be necessary.

You're right .10cc is what I should have typed.

Your original post - at least on my screen - had the decimal point! It read .10cc. When it was re-posted, the decimal point disappeared. That might be a problem with the system, so we might have to type such things longhand , like (point one zero cc). Anyway, it started right...
