Colorado

Not sure where you got your information but I just pulled this information directly from Central Hatchery's web site.

Central Hatchery is $86.00 for 100 broiler chicks plus shipping and a $5.00 charge if under 100 ordered. They only offer cornish x broilers.

Central Hatchery 100 is $86.00 or $.86 each
Add $5.00 if under 100 ordered.
I believe we are zone 4 so $22 for 100 or $13 for 50
50 chicks would be $1.22 each
100 chicks would be $1.08 each
even using the highest zone shipping
50 chicks would be $1.38 each
100 chicks would be $1.24

It's quite a savings for anyone that wants to raise the cornish x.
LOL! I found my mistake. I took the price as $86 for 50 instead of 100. Thanks!!! Definitely a good deal then!

Hey all so we have had some issues this past week, our 1 year old Sheppard ripped open his chest on a rock, down to the bone. He has had staples and drains and we have to keep him calm and quiet. He is a hellion and it has been taxing and now we have a chicken injury.

Here is what I posted yesterday in the Myer thread.

Well me skills as a chicken keeper are quickly being put to the test. Yesterday when I let the gang out for free range time in the am, one of our Delaware's and a BO Roo didn't get down off the roosts. I didn't think much of it at the moment, figured he was just trying to win her over. The boys are more active each day with trying to impress the gals. Anyway I checked her later and she was still up there, I decided I needed to check her out. Afterall she was missing morning of fermented food and scraps. I got her down and noticed her left eyewas closed and seeping. I tried not to freak out as this is my first injury, so I got on BYC and figured I needed to do a saline rise to better assess what the issue was. Well I did that and we discovered she had been pecked right above her eye. We assume for one of the boys trying to mate. After we did the saline we applied Blu Kot and then go her out for free range. She ate right away and had her eye open. Later she was roosting with everyone. Checked her this am and it seemed worse, so I did saline and let her free range. She was Enjoying her time until another girl pecked her again! So we isolated her in our smaller coop with food and water and then checked her well. Upon further inspection we could see another peck mark on her lid of her eye. It was very red, so wet a paper towel with ice in it and iced her gently around her eye, the swelling reduced after about 10-15 and she was opening her eye. Sadly, we believe she will be blind, she doesn't react to movement on that side. So we are going to keep her apart from the others for a few days, see if we can get the inflammation down and the redness reduced. So we are able to have her in a separate coop that is apart of the enclosed run. We can allow everyone to have free range time with access to the main coop, but no access to enclosed run. We can then allow her to be out during the day in the enclosed run. She seemed pretty content to get some alone time without others picking on her, she was hungry too, as my guess she didn't eat much yesterday. I gave her fermented feed, scratch, fresh garden greens and tomatoes. She is eating and drinking water. Will continue to do saline rinses and ice three times a day and keep her separate for a few days and then see how she integrates. I cannot upload pics ATM as my iPad is screwed up. Will try later. Also my brilliant bf built some new roosts for the big coop, we wanted to make sure everyone has enough room. It took him like 30 minutes to build something, I wish had a building brain.

Update today - she roosted fine in the smaller coop and was separate from the flock. Her eye was caked shut, did the saline rinse and iced it. She was cute snuggled her beak under my arm pit and napped. She is definitely blind and she was opening it more after he treatment, she is eating and drinking just fine. Will keep her separate until the redness and swelling goes down and then try to integrate back with the others. So during the day everyone is free ranging and having access to the big coop and she is out in the enclosed run, safe from being picked on. My brilliant bf designed the run and coops this way for this very reason, I knew he was a keeper! ;)

COChix

What a great chicken mom. Sounds like you did a great job with the eye problem. I have had several chickens over the years that have lost sight in one eye and they adjust very well. I even had a totally blind hen that did very well but we did baby her.

Thank you, I am relieved to hear that her prognosis is good as long as the others don't pick on her. Any suggestions as to how to integrate her? I was thinking when the redness is gone, we could put a couple of the more sweet EE with her in the run and see how they do and then go from there. I don't know if this is the way to do it haven't had time to research that.

Here is a shot of the new roosts in the big coop...

Cochix- most excellent!!

I just paid for my svart honas. The cemanis any day now. And the white bresse.

We're clearing the area I'm putting these 26 little chickers on. I just got their coop set up, and now putting up their enclosed run over the raised garden bed.

Putting these chickens to work!!!

It seems like none of my friends want any of these 5 week old chicks. So I'm keeping them on 26% protein gamebird feed to get them ready to process in about 6-9 more weeks. What do you guys think?

The itty bitties are getting so big so fast. And very curious, especially the br & a few slw, the white ones, only one is curious.

They eat a LOT!

If you are planing to get 10 make sure they are full grown before you put them in with your other chickens. other wise they will peck and be too ruff with the baby ones

cochix- I hope all is well with you, you're crazy busy! Well since she needs to be with others int he flock, I think as long as you have them in 3, as a flock is 3 or more?

Josephine, the clean faced no comb ee makes the most ruckus when she's about to lay and my roo is the sweetest on her too, compared to everyone else. This morning I ran out in my t shirt and drawers b/c it sounded like a dying cat in the laying flock run area, it's Josephine making her even bigger to do about the egg she's planning on laying today. Missy or Bessie already laid an egg by the time I had done my lap betwixt my 3 chicken areas.

I picked up 5 chicks from my friend yesterday, it looks like the splash black and white orpington roos got with her cemani ladies and these are the suspected progeny. One had a little band aid splint but was having a hard time flopping around so I cut it this am after consulting with my friend. I am doing everything bass ackwards, as we started with 9 week old pullets, then got older & older chickens until I got 27 (now 26) straight run chicks at big r in Elizabeth last Sunday as a meatie experiment, they were a few weeks old.

Now I have moved onto days old chicks, then to hatching eggs lol. Backwards.

Oh how everyone lost their minds today when they were brought out soft scrambled eggs. It's just now 10:45 am and I can finally get to my first cup of coffee today. It looks like it's going to be a looong one!

I am fine, just trying to keep my head above water. We still have Left Eye isolated waiting for the redness to reduce some more. Probably in next couple days I will begin with putting Gretchen in with Left Eye. Gretchen is a sweety petite EE and seems docile enough and maybe Isis or Honey another couple of EE that are smaller and pretty sweet. It seems to be a never ending battle trying to balance everything. I continue putting Terramycin ointment on Left Eye's chicken eye twice a day. I also just let her snuggle under my armpit and nap at least once a day. She has been putting herself away in the evening into her coop and has no problem getting onto the roosts. She seems to have dropped a little weight, but that is to be expected given her injury. She seems to better with solid type foods, like scraps. I have another batch of feed fermenting so she will get that starting tomorrow again, the probiotics can only help her.

Also we have a second RIR roo so now we have four Roo's and the pecking order is very apparent. We will be harvesting the second RIR roo in the next couple weeks for on dinner. We are just fattening him up. We have a great duo of roosters in Rocco, the alpha Buff Orphington and Rojo the beta and large RIR. Rocco breaks up fights between the lower ranked roosters as well as breaking up a roo and hen, if the roo is particularly rough or it lasts awhile. Rojo is the beta and muscle, all flash and flare. He has now started a nice head bob when trying to court the girls, I will have to try and get a video. Rojo is huge, but concedes to Rocco. Rocco isn't flash or drama he just eludes his rank and everyone knows it. It is pretty fascinating to watch the dynamis of a flock. I am definitely getting lessons from all my interactions.

Also we had an attempted great escape on the top of the ones where we have them free range and Little One the one I hand fed on day 2 is the ring leader, she is mischievous! We will be adding extensions to the fence so they cannot fly up there. Other than that we seem to have a pretty happy, healthy and contented flock.

You sound as busy as I am if not busier!

@Mtn - I was wondering how your meaties are doing and how long until harvest? Will you sell the meat or is it intended to feed your family?

Today in Boulder it felt like fall and it gave me a moment of of panic, knowing all that will be coming due for harvest from our gardens. I have begun pulling off larger batches of tomatoes and will be blanching and freezing them.
