Colorado

I have seen a chicken wire ball that was a snake trap. They put bait in the middle of it and then when the snake swallowed it, it was too fat to get back out. Seemed to work well....

Yeah, I've seen a couple like that in my searches. Might do that just to see if I can figure out if it is a snake or not.

I need some help with this bird.
First I need to know if isa boy or girl I don't know much about silkies, I think is a girl.
I got this little thing on the weekend she has been in quarantine so far (my friend got it form an older lady) I want it silkies so I got it.She has not show of any respiratory illnesses neither lies on feather (vent under wings etc), but she has the worst feet ever I don't know if is scaly mites or something else, I just want to believe that is dirt and dry weather and stuff in there but… there is when i need your opinions.
Today after the bit of snow I got her and start with cleaning I soak her feet in warm water and after start to pill the gross things with a scalpel, I did cut her nail they did need a big trimming. I have stop to give her a rest and put some coconut oil as a moisturizer and to help with the minor cuts she got in the process.
One thing i notice is on her litre toes not the one up, once i pull the gunk almost look that the toe skin is dying she still able to move that toe but use just a tiny bit of connection between the nail and rest of the toe.

Any ways I will need some ideas of treatment if there is something else i need to do.
I am thinking on doing another cleaning on Wednesday (every other day from then until cure) but maybe just with warm water and a baby brush, and then put the coconut oil.

Comb picture (I think is girl)

Before the spa treatment.

During the spa treatment notice the white thing almost not shape to the foot.

After the treatment.

Well, I haven't talked to my husband about our options yet, but our flock has Pateurella, also called Fowl Cholera. I'm just as devastated as if it was Meraks. I'm waiting on the vet to call me back. They're taking too long.

Not very familiar with it, but looked it up on line, and is the more "common" of chicken diseases..... Really?????

Will not let me cut and paste the article on Fowl Cholera and treatment.... It can be treated, it is mostly transmitted via mice and rats, these can come from your neighboring farms onto your property and pass it along to your flock. It has also been found in wild birds, and waterfowl.

Here is another link I found, pretty sure you have already seen it.... http://www.merckmanuals.com/vet/poultry/fowl_cholera/overview_of_fowl_cholera.html

It's one of the few things that even if treated, they'll always be carriers and will infect any new birds.
Honestly, I had to look up what the woman on my answering machine said, didn't even know how to spell Pasteurella. Once I started digging, I'm pretty upset they're acting like this is something that can wait. I had another Cochin chick die yesterday, she was doing the exact same things as the previous.
If this is what it is, I'll be culling a barn full of chickens...I'm not sure I'll be able to pick back up and start over.

I am looking up information to see if this can be passed along to chicks via a hatching egg, if not, then at least you could hatch out some chicks, keep them in another part of your property and go from there. Did read that depopulating would get rid of it 100 percent, and yes, after treating those you have now with atibiotics, it will come back once the antibiotics are stopped and they are considered carriers..... I would ask the people doing the testing to see what their thoughts are before you make a decision, they are the experts after all.

There is also information here on BYC on Fowl Cholera.

eta....
Treatment

Sulphonamides, tetracyclines, erythromycin, streptomycin, penicillin. The disease often recurs after medication is stopped, necessitating long-term or periodic medication.

Sorry to hear the verdict. Perhaps CSU hasn't called back because they are doing their due diligence talking with other universities to give you the best information they can. Take all the information you've gathered off the internet with a grain of salt and see what they come back with.

We don't have any males old enough to breed yet. Just the older Creams, and the young Cochins. I can't imagine continually treating with antibiotics, that doesn't seem like a very good life for the chickens. I have no idea how I'm going to clean out everything out there. I've been working on adding organic matter to their run for two years, hoping to plant things out there for them. Percheron chick...my husband is the voice of reason, telling me to calm down and wait for the phone call. Most things I read online, I ignore, but reputable poultry websites are saying the same things. I'll just keep up my normal routine with them, and wait it all out. They're just so dang beautiful. I was really looking forward to Spring, and having a flock full of feathers roaming the yard again.

I would continue your soaking treatments. I'm not sure what scaly mites look like, but I do know a lot of people like Nu-Stock for treating a lot of those symptoms.
Show us a picture of her head, so we can see the poof of feathers. That's the easiest way to sex a Silkie.
